After almost getting an Einstein last year, and then getting laid off right before I pulled the trigger I am now getting an Einstein from the classified section. Now comes the part that sucks. To save on duty I am getting it sent to Miami in January since I will be there for work, then I will bring it home to Canada. I have over a month to wait until I can really sit down to play it

Well anyways I am looking at buying some 5881, or 6L6 tubes for it so that I can see if I prefer those over the new Ruby EL34s that are coming with it. I have found an interesting Tung-Sol 5881 tube, but the max plate voltage is 400 VDC. http://thetubestore.com/tungsol5881.html There is the info. Will the Einstein fry these tubes?? If they would can someone recommend a good 6L6/5881 type tube??

Also for preamp tubes what does everyone like. I play a wide variety of music, but mostly hard rock. I like a well defined sound that has a bit of a low end thump, but is not muddy.

Now only a month to wait. I might have to make a footswitch for the channel one mod to keep me entertained.

I realize that you are talking about Einstein, but I'm just a JJ power tube lover. Best power tubes I've ever played, andI'veplayed with dozens of others. However, I don't care much for the JJ preamp tubes at all.

Go with JJ-E34L, IMO are the best in class. I've got six in my Herbert and it goes from CH1 sparkling clean, to CH2 mild crunch, flip to + on and instant '80s metal, then onto CH3 and fagetabowit!!! :m17:

I think that I have a pair of them that are still almost new sitting around. I bought them for an amp that I sold before I got the tubes.

I do want to try a 6L6 type tube. Also any pre-amp tube advice you can give would be great. I have all Tung-Sol 12ax7s in my Peters, and I really like them, but I didn't care for them in my ENGL E530 pre-amp.

For Diezel amps I have found through hours and hours of comparisons to be These. They are consistent, reliable, great tone and readily available.

I had the Tung-Sol 12AX7 in my Herbert for a while but went back to the ones mentioned above. The Tung-Sol 12AX7 are pricey and I found them ultimately to be bit lackluster at times

Also, don't get pulled into the "Matched Sections" bullshit, just get the preamp tubes.

I have heard that matched sections can only make a difference in the phase inverter. I can see the argument for that. As far as for the preamp goes the only upgrade I could see would be the tested high gain ones in an amp without enough gain which I am sure that the Einstein is not!!

I wish I didn't have to wait another month.

Patience is bliss, nothing this good can be rushed.

Best of luck! :)

For powertubes...i liked the SED stuff. pretty reliable. Maybe a KT77...best of both worlds (El34 & 6L6) for pres...i hated the Tung Sols in my Diezels. Went back to TADs & then the new Rubys.

Except for when I first receive a new Diezel amp, and play it for at least 6 months without pulling tubes, I prefer the NOS preamp tubes from Mullard, Telefunken, Brimar, RFT, and Radiotechnique.
For power tubes, I have found that JJ KT77's give me the best of a 6L6 and an EL-34 tone.
This is just my hearing telling me this. Obviously, your hearing will tell you something different, perhaps. These JJ's have been able to easily handle the Einstein plate voltage for my needs.

I do not need the enormous amount of saturation on tap in my amps, although, it never hurts to have extra horsepower, when needed. I wind up running the power tubes harder then the preamp tubes, yet the stock tubes in my Einstein were over three years old before I noticed that they needed changing out, and I work constantly, so the amp was used all the time.
My Einstein is a prototype, so I got it for Christmas in 2005 and didn't change out the stock tubes in it until about June of this year to the JJ KT77's. I have not encountered a single problem using them so far.
