How close are these in terms of tone and feel? Does the Einstein's Mega mode have about the same amount of gain as the third channel of the VH4? Also are they comparable in tightness?

Similarity in a real broad sense. Vastly different when working within the Diezel family exclusively.

In my experience, VH4 has a tad harder bite, stronger midrange and tighter bottom. Einstein is almost the way between the VH4 and Herbert channel 2 + without midcut.

The Einstein Mega-mode has a bit rounder mids, stronger growl. It is also less agressive in terms bite and attack. It chuggs wondefully and the lead tone is soulful. Thrash riffs are not a problem. If you don't down tune lower than C and play too fast on very low notes, you will be fine.

I still would like to add that, the "tone" is still similar as Mo stated. The feeling is different and they sit differently in the mix. But Diezel is a Diezel.

what people often forget with these discussions is that the same Diezel model from different years (different version# on PCB) can sound vastly different. So to compare an Einstein to a VH4 is basically meaningless without looking at the respective PCB version# . I've played many Diezels from the 90s up to very late models. Huge difference in tone. Then you have to consider the tubes installed. I heard once a comparison (live) between a very late model Einstein and a late model VH4 with the exact same tube configuration. The amps were demo'ed at different volumes and also cranked good. All guitar players present agreed that there was almost NO audible difference and whoever played said they both "felt" very similar.

I've played older Herberts that I did not like, but they sounded much better after an update and serious tune up. Then the new Herberts sound great to me out of the box. All different PCB version#s .

i got an einstein from 2010 and a vh4 from 2008... they do not sound alike. i even think that the einstein is more mid rangy (upper mids). but they both for sure have a diezel tone in common.

Would you say the Einstein has the most Marshally tone out of the bunch then?

I would agree with that!

That must be why I like mine so much.

I own an Einstein and 2 vh4's. I don't think those channels are that similar. I mean they're similar enough that I find that they don't blend well with each other while recording for me, but YMMV.
