Hey all!

Opps...I meant EL34.

I am using the SL2 and Eg5 in my MOD 50 but the 5881s did not work for me - too scooped and 6L6 sounding. I also didn't like E34Ls - yikes...too aggressive and hard sounding. One thing I have yet to do is gig or jam with the 5881s.....so maybe they need to be opened up. At the next jam I am bringing the EL34s and 5881s.

Anyway, any tips on bias for the EL34s? I have GT EL34s and have them now at 39 - test point 1 which sets test point 2 at 40.

Thanks!!!!!!

Thats where I played thoughs at.

I have been using the E34L tubes and prefer them over the standard EL34 and the 5881. Bigger sound, more headroom tighter overall and punchier in the mids. Tried the JJ's and they are good, but to my ears the GT e34L sounds a little better.

..in case you want an option...

What didn't you like bout the 5881s? To me the JJ E34Ls had the mids sucked out that the standard EL34s have. I like mids, thick mids. I also found them more harsh and edgy. The EL34s seem to have more mids than the E34Ls.

Next jam I am taking EL34s, E34Ls and 5881s.

How big a difference did you find the GT over the JJ?

I've just never been fan 6L6/5881. No matter what amp I've used them in, they always have the same high frequency thing going on that just grates on my ears. I also feel they lack in the midrange. I don't hear the mids being sucked out in the E34L. To my ears the mids are just punchier and not as "fluid" or compressed as EL34. The GT's also seemed to have a sweeter top end to them compared to the JJ's. Also had a longevity issue with JJ's. Went thru 2 of them rather quickly where as I've never lost a GT yet to a failure.

Good Luck with your tube quest!

+1 on the 5881s....I was never a 6L6 fan and it holds true with the 5881s.

I may give the JJ E34Ls another shot. I am tempted to order the GTs but I already have new JJs.

Know what else worked for me - the SED Wing tip C EL34s. They came stock and sounded good.

I will have to try the SED's.
