I have been considering picking up a seven string for a while. Played one that had shit pickups. Being the EMG whore that I am, I would like your guys take on the 7 string EMG's. 707, 81-7 or the X series 7.

Had the 707's in both my ESP's and dumped them, they were real
muddy,I'm not a knob turner but I messed around with the EQ's
on my amps for days looking for a sweet spot, came up empty.
Go with the blackouts, you won't be sorry.

I might try the X-Series. But if you're not into those, definately get the 707-TW for the neck. The dual coil action is the ticket. Flip the pickup around to get the single coil closer to the neck for more of a Strat tone.

Check this video for a Duncan Blackout (flamed Charvel) EMG 707 (blue Ibanez) comparison. All of the neck sounds are in single coil mode. The Axe FX tone was the same all the way thru.

I can't stand EMGs in a sevenstring, high output passive pups just have more life and roar to them, IMO. I'm a BKP Warpig enthusiast.

I can compare the 707 and 81-7 to a regular 81 for ya.
The 81-7 sounds just like an 81 but with even more high-pass goin' on, so overall more high-mid sounding with even tighter lows and less beef. The 707 reacts a tad more like a passive in that there's more low end coming through, also, the highs are sizzly (like Recto sizzle, ya know?), overall it sounds thicker.

^ I also have a BKP Miracle Man 7, way too much beef comin' outta that thing for tech metaly stuff tuned down to G, IMO. I need that high-pass thing that the EMG's offer, or I wouldn't need a bass player.

I had the 707 in my ESP (alder neck through), and recently took it out for an 81-7. 81-7 is more up my alley and fits in the mix better, has a nice upper mid slice and tight lows. 707 has more lower mids which I would just scoop out anyway. Lots of peeps getting good tones with both but for what i wanted out of it I preferred the 81-7.

Thanks for the respones guys! The guitar I am looking at has the 707 but from what you guys are describing I think the 81-7 would be more my taste. I think I could try the 707 for a while and then get the 81-7. Thanks again

I have the 707-TW in my Schecter. Its the original EMG 7-string pickup

I am not sure I would like the 81-7.

I think Nevermore is a great example of the 707. I love it. the bass is really full, and maybe a touch muddy, but it sounds better through a boost. I think he 81-7 would make it sound too thin.

People say its the 7 string version of the 85. I say it is close, but having both, it is a bit different. The high end on the 707 isnt as smooth, and the bottom end is different. Like the lower mids are sucked out more or something.

Any guitar i've had EMG 81,85,707's has sounded better with duncan blackouts. In paticular the AHB-3.They just sound more organic, and yet have more ballz.

Never really was a fan of EMG pickups until I tried one that had a 707 in it. All that I had tried prior to had been 81 models, not really a fan, but the 707 turned my head a little. I still prefer passives, but if I had to go EMG I would choose 85 or 707.

I have an Ibanez RG7620 with dual 707 pups.

Here's a live clip. All the gain/overdrive is the Uberschall, no boost or overdrive pedals used. The warbly clean tone is the AnalogMan BiChorus set to a fast sweep. Bridge pup for drive tones, neck pup for cleans. Not the greatest sound quality, but I hope it helps. Please excuse what ever clams may pop up, we had just started playing this song when this was recorded. :aww:

I do have an 707-81 I want to try in the bridge just to see how it sounds. If I like it, I'll put that 707 in the neck of my other 7 string and grab another 707-81 for the bridge to go along with it.

I think the 707s are badass in my Loomis.

I think the Ash/Maple combo makes a big difference in that guitar.

I have a couple Jackson COW 7 strings with 707. Also I have owned a couple Ibby's and Schecter's-stock pups except I tried the JB-7 and hated it, weird considering I like the normal JB

When I bought the COW I was planning on ditching the EMG fast, I have never gelled with actives and I bought the guitar based on acoustic properties... 4 years later and I still think the 707 is killer in these guitars, they just sound right...clear and thick

Every time I think I should ditch the 707 I plug it in and think "why"

Hope it helps!!

Yes it does, thank you sir.
