Eminence DV-77 Speaker with 20 different high gain amps

Finally got around to giving the Eminence Omega DV-77 a good thrashing. I haven't soent much time with the speaker in the 2 years that I've owned them, as I really have no issues with my V30s and Greenbacks, but it's always fun to explore new options.
I put 20 different high gain monster amps through the speaker to see what worked and what didn't. Overall, I dug it with the JCM 2000, the Splawn Pro Stock, Friedman BE Deluxe and Bogner Ecstacy, which tells me I think it works well with Marshally mids.
Anyways, what has your guys' experience been with the speaker, those of you who have tried it?

I'm not sure if it's the cab's design, the voicing of the speaker, or a combination of both, but the mids had a very hollow almos phasey sound to them. Very Eminence-y. I wasn't a big fan, personally.

But Orange cabs kinda sound like that as well even with Celestions. Or cabs where the back panel is completely parallel to the front baffle.

Thanks for putting the effort, but these were not my favorite tones by you.

What are your thoughts?
 
I bought York Audio’s DV-77 pack. A very unimpressive speaker that’s touted for downtuned guitars but just sounds like mush in my experience.
 
Some eminence speakers are great. I ended up with a pair that sound really good.
 
You take the time to put together musical libraries on YouTube that need to exist but not one persons really assembled to this degree. Thanks for taking the time to mic everything up and record this - I’ve been directly interested in trying a X pattern cab of DV77 and EVM12L
 
From what I've heard it sounds like a speaker to sound good by itself, perhaps not in a mix?

I need to listen to it more
 
Thanks for doing this Kyle. Oddly I just got done reinstalling a pair of DV-77 in a mesa 4 x 12 with mesa v30s about 5 minutes ago. I think the speaker pairs well with other brighter speakers. Not as big of a fan of it on its own in isolation. I do think it is a bit pickier about what head you're using than a v30 (which is my go to).
 
Well, the DV-77 wasn't designed to be a standalone, right?

Even the Slipknot dude mixes it in his cab with brighter speakers.

I agree, I've always said I can't get along with most eminence speakers due to the hollow midrange thing. According to some people I've talked to behind the scenes, it has to do with the way they are constructed, which is a good bit different from Celestion. No idea if that's true, but it's from someone who helped designed the DV-77.

That said, I felt it worked really well with Marshall style amps that typically have a bright top end and spikey upper mid thing going on. But for the most part, I just didn't jive with it. Too smooth and dark for my tastes. With the VHT, I actually hate it, as I thought it brought out a quacky midrange thing.

I briefly had it installed with v30's in my mesa cab when I first got them, but i found that the V30 kind of buried the DV77 and even though it seems to be all the rage in the metal world over the last couple years, it just didn't work for me.

I haven't tried A LOT of eminences, but the 3 or 4 that I've tried have been OK in the room, but plain unusable under the mic. Exactly because of that midrange thing going on.

The clips I hear of the newer V30 soundalike with the Kurt Mueller cone that they released don't seem to have it. However, they do seem like kinda boring-sounding speakers too.
 
Maybe it would pair well with an M65 creamback. (?)

On it's own I agree (based only on clips like these) that it sounds better with amps that have the glassy highs.

the M75 is the brighter, more aggressive of the creamback speakers, so I think that would be a better pair with a smooth, dark speaker like the DV-77
 
The only eminence I really liked was the Splawn small block series made by them to Scott’s specs for Splawn Amplifiers. I know the small blocks have been made by a few different vendors over the years though. I paired them with two Chinese V30s and that cabinet kicked ass.

There's always caveats with non-Celestion speakers ("oh you have to blend it with something" etc), and yet there are countless recordings made with just a single mic on a m25/h30/65/T75/V30 etc that are just like..... benchmark reference tones.

It’s hilarious how every non-Celestion manufacturer is always comparing their products to Celestion. “Our version of a Greenback” “a better V30” etc

Dv-77 is severely overrated to me, agreed. Not sure what the hype is about this speaker. It’s soft, round, but also honky and like you said too bandpassed at the same time. It’s hard for me to say anything great about a speaker that isn’t made by celestion, for 100 percent exactly what you said. Dead on the money as usual @easstudios
 
I had a mesa halfback loaded with ms-12's.....fuckin ripped. Charlie(marshallfreak?) sold it to me and I sold it to juggernaught. I also love the 15" legends....and they work with v30's. Those are the only emi's I've tried.....oh yeah...regular legends as well.....they were fine....when they released these dv's I had high hopes but alas.....everything I have heard from players has been meh........thanks for the vid kyle....
