I've heard arguments for both sides, what do you think. Aside from the channels/features (I would lean toward Savage in that regard as I find two channels with a shared EQ pretty weak, especially for the price of a Fireball) what is the actual tonal difference here?

Let's include the Invader as well, because I know Bulb of Periphery uses one so how does that compare to the Savage as well?

I owned them all........for me personally? I would take the Invader 150 again in a heartbeat.
While I play metal....its not all we play and I like the versatility of the Invader 150.

Way back when I A/Bd the Savage and Powerball. I much preferred the Powerball. Which does the Invader sound more like, the Savage or the PB?

Jim

the Invader sounded like a Super hot rod Marshall on Channel 2(that was my Fave)
Channel 3 sucked ass......
Channel 4 was like Powerball (sorta) but not as HEAVY.
I played that amp 95% of the time on the 2nd channel. The Savage was just a beast. But when I bought it.....I chose it over the Powerball. The Fireball 100 is just a Metal Machine. Turn the gain back....it just gets "less metal" if that makes sense. ;)

Blackmore is based on the Savage tone right?
Like a one channel Savage? Thats what I always thought it was. All the clips on the Blackmore sounded damn good to me!

Yes I believe so, it is a two channel - shared EQ amp. It is nice a tight, plenty of gain, and is soooo easy to dial in. I've been slowly trying out other amps and it still has beat out the Axe-Fx, Mako, Uberschall, etc. It's one amp that I'll never get rid of. Plus, compared to a lot of other amps, it is cheap.

Thats what I like about the Diezel VH4....
pound for pound.....its a GREAT PRICED AMP!
Excellent Clean.....
Excellent Rock.....
Excellent Hard Rock.......
Superb METAL channell.......
Saves me from having 2 to 3 amps!! :D

i had the chance to trade my 5150 for an invader and didnt. i much prefer the cranked 5150 tone which moves the hair on your skin.

out of them all it depends on the type of music you want to play. ive always loved the savage 120 for a happy medium between a fireball and a powerball.

if i had to own only one though - VH4. not joking here, second in line is a savage 120. great cleans and a brutal lead channel that can do great lead tones as well.

VH4 did it without as much saturation and was tight as a teen........

the fireball 60 would be my third opinion. almost all of oddessy in symphony X is recorded with one of these and it really gets serious. the amplifier lacks in features compared to the savage and powerball though. but its balls to the wall all of the time.

that is where I am at. The Best amp out there Pound for POUND!!
and NO..........I AM NOT A DIEZEL FANBOI!!

This amp simply rules........

Awesome bros. I think I am settled on the Savage then. I read about replacing its tubes with KT88's for a great effect and I like the idea. I'm new to tube amps though so IDK if I'll be able to put those in other amps that have EL34's or 6L6 or something that has the normal set of four power tubes...

I own a Savage 120 through Engl 4x12 Greenbacks.
Pros: It sounds massive, super versatile. and very tone-shapeing, though the Invader 100 beats it (i prefer Invader 100 over the 150)
The amp, how i set it, bleeds a dark high gain attack. Ihsahn from Emperor / Ihsashn uses a Savage 120 in his home studio, where late Emperor and all Ihsahn albums were recorded. The amp is very clear, but expect it to sound a little bit evil lol play with the contour, depth punch, and rough settings for the gain, so many sounds unbelievable. The cleans too are briliant and completely clear and warm, i like the "bright" setting for the clean Ch1. Ch2. is a little dirty-er, the amount of dirty up to you. Ch.3 is a more traditional high gain amp, but waaaay warmer than most. Ch.4 Is a lead blast to hell, put the first gain stage at about 12 o'clock and second at around 3 o'clock, harmonically rich gain soaked but still refined tone. Best amp I've owned personally. Floyd Rose + Savage 120 Lead Channel = hours of marvelous entertainment. :dimesquealsfromhell:
Beast of an amp.

Cons: lil bit heavy, but, pff, live in cases exist so whatever lol

Nope, two different types. I use either JJ KT88's or GT 6550's. I prefer the 6550's personally.

Eurotubes.com has a high gain and regular complete tube replacement set, those preamp tubes selected are marvelous, I just swap the power tubes with 6550's when i bring it to my tech.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I've heard things about the ENGL Fireball's tone completely falling apart when you turn it up. Is this something that runs in the ENGL line in general or is it specific to that model? Does the Savage sound like shit when cranked up or does the sheer fact of being based on 6550/KT88's save it in that regard?

The Louder I cranked the Fireball 100 it did 'seem' to lose a little of the heavy GAIN it had at lower volumes. But there is so much gain on tap with this amp....it was never a problem.
It is a SUPER LOUD AMP!!

Thanks again bro! In your second sentence, "this amp" meaning the Fireball or the Savage?
