EQ in the loop, huge difference?

I got an Orange Super 100 Combo and sounds great but obviously has a distinct, mid strong tone. I thought about maybe throwing an EQ pedal into the loop in case I need it. How usable are these and how much do they charge ge the sound?

Also, any cheaper but solid recommendations would be great if they are essential. Thanks!

I love em. Guitar tonestacks are really, really primitive. You'd be shocked at how much of a difference some specific surgical EQ tweaks here and there can make.

Yeah, an EQ in the loop can be very dramatic. I rarely play without an EQ in the loop to sculpt the tone. I have 4 or 5 different ones.

I can't play any amp without an MXR 10 band in the loop. Personal opinion of course, but to me it's night/day. $5000 amp or $500 amp...doesn't matter to me. An EQ in the loop is a game changer for me. Haven't played without it the last 15 years.

How about the 6 band for a beginning goon like myself? I can't believe I've never used one.

Never owned the 6, sure its great too. I've used the original black red LED 10 band all these years and it finally died a few months ago. Bought the new silver blue LED 10 band and it's just as good.

Mine is always on.

I use it to dial out some of the bass in my Splawn.

I would grab a parametric
Only Parametric I ever owned was the empress and I didn't like it. Sounded processed/synthetic. The MXR is WAY more natural sounding to me. Maybe that was just the empress not the fact it was parametric. Well guess I do have a TC 1140, but those are a different animal being on the vintage side.

I had the same experience with the Empress. I've also owned the Boss EQ-200 and sold that one fast. A/B'ed with the MXR 10-band and it just lacked the warmth...way too sterile like the Empress. I also own an Analogman modded GE-6 and it sounds excellent. Between that and the MXR I'm all set, though I have had my eye on some of the Master Effects pedals.

Yeah I think it’s just the empress. Their others pedals I’ve had also had that inherently clinical sound with ugly artifacts around the notes. For other PQ’s I’ve only had vintage pedals and rack PQ’s, but they’ve been very good and more natural sounding

I’ve heard from others that the Master Effects also have a synthetic sound, but haven’t tried it. My favorite EQ pedals are my vintage Ibanez PQ-401 and GE-601. I also like my vintage blue MXR 10-band and Boss GE-10, but the Ibanez’s have more warmth and pleasing midrange

A simple graphic EQ is the single most powerful and useful tool a guitarist can have, IMO. I think graphics are better for most guys, parametrics take a little more experience and if you haven’t used too many EQs, it’s easy to get heavy handed. I actually feel that Orange amps in particular almost NEED an EQ. I played a Rockerverb for a long, long time and struggled, tried a million boosts, speaker changes, etc trying to get a little bit of that British bite and cut when I was playing with another guitar. A cheap 6-band MXR EQ was the ticket. I tend to go subtle with my EQ decisions, cut a tiny bit of mud, tick up some high mids/highs depends on the room. Just a few DB, I don’t go wild with the slider.
