I think as much as he would have been a great icon for rock ( metal )

everything I have ever read said that he wanted to be a classical gutarist and was taking lessons while on the road .

but .... this is one of the few people ( that I know of ) bringing classical into rock ( metal ) at the time ..

not only his lead playing but the song writing too . The way some of those tunes were structured is just friggin too cool .

I found out who he was when I was 12 ... he died that same year

man what I would have done to hear a few more albums !!!! or better yet have a chance to see him now !!!

Instead, we're left with Yak Chylde.......

Randy is my main inspiration and the reason I kept on trying to get better.....

I was lucky enough to see him....my first concert when I was 11. If my parents knew what went on there, I would have been grounded for life. :D
Holy shit that was the craziest show I have ever seen!! The crowd was insane! I'm glad I was up in the seat section. Opened up with the intro to Diary Of A Madman while the crowd was going berserk. Oh man it was killer!!!

RIP Randy. :aww:

Lucky guy! My first Ozzy show was on the Bark at the Moon tour. Still an awesome event, but I never got to see Randy.

It's funny, I still remember exactly where I was when I first was told he died in a plane crash.....

Yeah, me too. had tix to see him at nassau colliseum, ended up seeing brad gillis. great guitarist in his own right, but no Randy.

I think I was at home when I heard he died....Can't remember. I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard Bonzo died and Steve Clark of Def Leppard. I was at Mcdonalds eating a Quarter Pounder when my brother told me Bonzo died. Can't believe I remember that.....I must have been 9.

My brother saw the Bark At The Moon tour but I did not. He was with me at the first show. I don't think I ever asked him which show was better. He did say Jake was badass though. I will have to pick his brain and see if he remembers.....

this is one of those clips I just sit here and eat a bit of humble pie and wonder just how far he would have taken it.............. :aww:

What's so special about his playing on that vid?

Is it just me or does this tone sound way better than the NAMM 1959RR videos?

there is a fluid sense to his playing that just comes accross.
you also have to remember from what time that came from, and what had been done and NOT done up to that point.

Randy's tone is great there. I could listen to that tone and style of playing all day. YJM's tone and playing I couldn't take for too long

whats your point

Well, Randy was a great guitarist at his time but he wouldn't have become a virtuoso like Yngwie, PG etc.
But still props to Randy! :)

since he is dead, one will never know, but you are entitled to your opinion, just as we are entitled to ours.
funny though, if this is a randy appriciation thread, why you would come in here to prop up someone else while putting him down.
and for the record, pick up most anything performed by perlman by pagganinni, there you will find just about every YM riff ever done.
I dont put down YM, but not very original IMO

Well, I chose YJM and PG because they are among the best rock guitar virtuosos. They offer a great comparison against Randy's abilities at the age of 25. Like I said, I like Randy's music a lot and he was a great guitarist and it's such a shame that he was taken away at such young age.

I forgot to put `IMO` at the end of this phrase: " Well, Randy was a great guitarist at his time but he wouldn't have become a virtuoso like Yngwie, PG etc. "

IMO ...

something Randy had that set him apart was dynamics ...

so many different moods and textures .... where obviously YJM is a shredding machine ... but pretty much just one dynamic ..

which is too bad because the vids I have seen of him where he does actually slow down and let you feel some notes have been incredible ..

Randy was one of my main influences. Loved his playing/songwriting but never cared for his tone

To Jakem's defense, I saw Malmsteem open up for AC/DC years ago and no other guitarist anywhere, at anytime, blew me away as much as he did me...simply amazing

what a shame for Randy's untimely death...we can only imagine what he'd be today :(
