I need some input from the rig-talk community. I have the opportunity to purchase either a EVH 6l6 5150 III 2x12 Combo or an EVH 50 Watt 6l6 head & EVH 4x12 Cab. Price is not a determining factor, however, the amp + cab option would be more expensive. I am wondering which setup would any of you pursue vs the other? I don't gig, it would just be for my own loud enjoyment at home. My current setup is an FM3 through studio monitors. I am not really looking to replace one with the other unless its really a compelling change (i.e. prefer amp + load box vs fractal). Interested in feedback on which to go after as I am having trouble deciding.

Thanks

My advice, go for the head and 4x12. The sound of a 4x12...even at home only, can't be beat. If you decide down the road that the 4x12 for some reason is too much, you could always sell and scale down to a 2x12 cab. With the 2x12 combo, you are stuck in that format.

Detroit, it is like you read my mind. I've been curious about this as well. What about 1x12 versus 2x12? Anyone want to weigh in on that? I have a 1x12 which is easy to take back and forth to practice. How great does a 2x12 sound in comparison?

If money and space are not an issue, head and 4x12 is the way to go.

Small sample size consensus so far is head + 4x12 cab. Thanks for the replies

I owned EVH 2x12 combo from 2013-2021. I sold it moving across country(only because last minute Uhaul cancelled and was concerned about room in our POD). I have another inbound. The 2x12 combo is heavy, the 1x12 combo is only slightly smaller and about 15Lbs lighter is all. But the 4x12 is the same weight, so seems like even trade. I've also owned the EVH 4x12, not with a EVH 50w head, but a 100w Splawn.

Here is why I like the combo:
1) I love the power scaling. It is awesome
2) I really like the reverb.
3) I like 8ohm speakers. I've tried to like 16ohm speakers...they just don't do it for my ears.

When I bought the EVH 4x12, I compared it to my Splawn 4x12, I didn't care for it. Sounded thin. But that's not to say it won't sound great with an EVH head. I bet it does. I've heard plenty of clips and live performances where I worked of EVH cabs, and they sound great.

I had been looking for another EVH combo for months, finally dropped some coin on one. Because I am in an apartment right now, I was contemplating "can I just be happy with the 1x12?" I probably could be, but the 2x12 has 8 ohm speakers and probably sounds a bit bigger. I went with what i sold prior, cuz I really did love it. Hope I love the one inbound?

I was all set on the combo for reasons 1&2 you outlined, but never thought about #3, I appreciate everyone’s input

I have both. Well I don’t have a EVH 4X12. But I have the 6L6 50W head and the 6L6 2x12 combo.

Feedback so far is right, 4X12’s sound bigger better and the combo doesn’t quite get there

Having said that I love the combo and would never sell. The power scaling feature is awesome, the portability is killer. I’ve heard there’s more gain on blue channel than the head b/c of the design. It’s a keeper for me.

The heads can be found everywhere but I don’t see so many 2X12 combos so I’d be worried I couldn’t replace it. Not sure if I helped u or not but if I was in your position I think I’d go combo because they’re so cool. Then get a 412 and then,…
