Has anyone ever tried JBL's along with Greenbacks? This is a clip of each speaker (RWTD from VH1). As most of you already know, the combo of these two speakers was the VH1 tone...

I don't know. Ed's favorite Marshall cab had 4 Celestion greenback 25 watters in it. There are pictures on the Internet. And Peavey employees back it up when he had them copy the cab and speakers for the 5150 cabs. Plus what's he using now? Same thing. That's what he likes.

Isn't there info they used two mics on one speaker from his cab for VH I? So it's one speaker and the different placement accounts for one sounding fizzier with more treble and one less fizzy and more middy. And that's what it sounds like to me. Different mic placement on the same speaker.

I didn't know a JBL was used? I thought it was Jensens and Greenies?

Outside Sunset Sound around the time of VH1 sessions...

"No cigar"? Not sure what your even talking about? Of course these tracks have "EVH written all over them". They are the original tracks from the VH1 sessions. Both speakers are featured in the clip.

Head over to the Metro forum and search around.

Not actual old JBL D's, but I've messed around with Weber clones. Been so long I don't even remember what I thought, but know I don't have them in any cabs.

Think I still have one of the Webers laying around, maybe a Neo version? Holler if you wanna give it a try.

JBLs definitely sound like the secret ingredient to the extra gainy and sizzly VH1 tone, as opposed to the VHII - 1984 tones.

yeah, i dont know - i hear a lot of the trademark sizzle in the jbl section of the clip

Yeah I agree. It seems pretty obvious if you listen to that clip that those are 2 very different speakers and it doesn't take much imagination to hear the end result of both of those being combined. That is the tone we hear on that first record for sure.
