for those of you that have played the evh wolfgang specials....how did you like 'em? pros/cons ?

Owned a pat-pending wolfgang special for 4 years.
I Love the gotoh-licensed floyd rose. It played amazing, loved the neck. The wolfgang peavey models have nice large frets too which is much better than the fender/EBMM small fret design.
I ended up selling it though. The three reasons were 22 frets and not 24, I always hit the pickup selector anytime i went to tap anything, and the upper fret access was terrible - reminded me of a les paul.
I sold it and got an ESP MII Special Custom instead. I know you also own an ESP MII, and honestly i would recommend trying to find one of those Peavey HP Specials that have the pickup selector changed if you want to check one out. I dont miss it, but that is not to say it was a bad guitar. Just not for me.
FWIW Wolfgangs hold their value great - i sold mine 4 years later (in need of a serious re-fret) for the same price that i paid for it. I sold it to a collector. Ended up being the wolfgang collector's favorite guitar.

I'd get a used Peavey Wolfgang Special over a EVH Wolfgang Special any day of the week
As glp80 said, the resale value alone....not to mention made in the usa! I just think the attention to detail and quality are much much better (on the 'special' versions)
I've seen lots of EVH Specials for sale for as low as $850 practically brand new here in the classifieds. Beautiful guitars that just don't sell that easily. Makes you go "hmmmm..."

They are great guitars for the price. I bought one for $375 and of course sold it for way more than that. But I've seen them here for as cheap as 550. There was something about the neck. I could deal with it, but I didn't love it. Loved the pickups though. But way better than any guitar I've played under 500.

I've played a few of the EVH standards and specials. I dont like them. My #1 is a Peavey Wolfgang Standard.
The neck on the new guitars is like a standard fender strat carve, the frets are too small (short), and the fit and finish on the few I've played wasnt that great...

Not sure why all the EVH Wolfgang hate. They are every bit as good as the USA Peaveys, IMO. I've been through lots. The neck radius is definitely bigger on the Peavey, because of this I had to use a more controlled vibrato on the EVH to avoid "slipping off" the fretboard. The EVH brand pickups are also slightly brighter with more midrange. The Peaveys seem higher output, but artificial harmonics are not a problem on either. Electronics, wiring, and routing are all noticeably better on the EVH. Peavey seemed to use better quality birdseye, while EVH uses better figured maple for tops.
That said, the Peavey Flametop Specials are great playing, great sounding, and great looking guitars. It's too bad they didn't come standard with birdseye necks. The regular basswood Special model is a great player's guitar, just not much of a looker. The nice thing about Wolfgangs are that you'll definitely get what you pay for. And those in the know are aware of a little secret called the Peavey HP Special. Enjoy!

The PV Wolf Specials play great for sure...I just could never get over the basswood...too honky for me. Great necks though.

I absolutely love my EVH Wolfgang Special. I have two other guitars (a Gibson Les Paul Standard with a Suhr Aldrich in the bridge and a stock Fender American Special Strat) and have barely touched them since I got the Wolfgang. The neck feels like the Charvel I used to have and the pickups sound killer. I got a hardtail and will probably end up getting another one (with a trem) in the future. I think they are great guitars.
