So, I headed to Baltimore on Saturday night for the Extreme and King's X show. Before the show we walked through "The Wire" to some recommended seafood joint. Though we feared for our lives, it ended up being worth it. We had some broiled scallops, crab cakes, and a few pints and then decided to take a cab to the venue.
We got in at about 745 and Rock n Roll Fantasy camp was still on stage (much to our dismay). It was basically Kip Winger, Mark Slaughter, Gilby Clarke, David Ellefson, and the guitar player from the Cars covering Beatles and Stones songs with a bunch of local players (and looking extremely bored).
King's X hit the stage at 820 and played almost exclusively new material. The Ty's rig looked awesome with 2 loaded M4s, 4 Eggie 4x12s and the black custom guitar with XV Motor City Pickups. Unfortunately, the soundman practically buried him. Both guitar and vocals were tough to hear over the PA, but we were close enough to the stage to hear the sound out of the cabs...and it was awesome. The band was tight and new material sounded great live, but almost everyone in the crowd was yelling to have Ty turned up. What I could hear him sounded awesome, but I was really let down not being able to hear the rig properly mixed in. Some songs they played were: Alright, Pray, Go Tell Somebody, We Were Born to Be Loved, Dogman, and Over My Head. They played a short 45 min set.
Extreme came on at 930 and sounded balls-out awesome. GREAT mix for these guys and Nuno's Randall amp both looked and sounded awesome. Vocally these guys were the bomb too. Ive seem alot of cringe-worthy live videos from Gary, but he was excellent at this show. They also played alot of new material which is hit ("Comfortably Dumb","Star") and miss ("Run") for me. We got classics like "Decadence Dance" "Get the Funk Out", "Cupid's Dead", and "Rest in Peace". But some choices were surprising. "Naked" from Waiting for the Punchline? How about "Cynical" or "Hip Today" instead? Also, no "Kid Ego" or "Mutha". Overall, they were fantastic for a 2 hour set and Id love to see them again. Nuno is simply amazing to see live and I was about 2 people from the front of the stage. Awesome.
I talked to Ty and dUg after their set and they were really nice guys. There were alot of people trying to get stuff signed so it was a quick chat, but both liked my Egnater shirt (Jeff: dUg says hes calling you to get one).
Anyway, it was a great show and worth the 3 hour trip. I snapped a couple pics on my iPhone that Ive uploaded. Check them out at the link below. A few good shots of Nuno doing "Midngiht Express" and one great shot of Nuno and Pat rocking on the interlude for "Cupid's Dead". I got pics of the Egnater cabs, but no action shots of Ty because I was too busy drinking beer and rocking out
