what are most of you guys using, on your XTC, L or H structure? New to the XTC. Right now I'm mostly on low.

H sounds a little thin to me. I'm trying to work my way from the clean to blue crunch to red over the top. L so far works the best for me so far. really enjoying this amp

My favourite Structure setting is fixed R11 2.7k resistor bypassed by 1.5uf MKT1813 cap with the whole circuit removed :).

Regards, Andy :)

what is mine set at now on H?

In H position You have 2.38K total cathode resistance (R11 4.75K//R43 4.75K) paralleled by tantalum 1.5uF cap C2.

My amp is modded in a way described above, so that gain stage in my amp is exactly the same as in Classic and 20th Anniversary. In H setting the switch engages 0.47uF MKT1813 cap placed in R43 slot, for additional gain boost. C2 slot is empty.

If You want to mod Structure circuit, You might replace R43 resistor with 6.2K, so You'll have 2.69K in H position. The tone would become a bit brighter and sharper.

I decided to have fixed 2.7K in that gain stage, because I noticed that whole Structure circuit darkens a tone a bit when engaged. And I have never used plain 4.75K in that stage, because that setting lacks of gain dramatically for my needs.

thanks

Are you guys getting enough gain with the L setting? I guess I've always just assumed that for higher gain stuff, you needed it on H.

Looks like I have another setting to try tonight!!!

Since the beginning I have found L Structure completely useless. Not enough gain not only for leads, but even for rhythms. That is why I modded my amp to have fixed 2nd gain stage. Note that either Classic and 20th Ann doesn't have Structure, both having classic Marshally 2k7 cathode resistance, bypassed by 1.5uF tantalum cap.

Set Your Structure to H and forget it ;)

Yeah what he said = Set Your Structure to H and forget it. I use H on all 3 channels - its what I believe the amp does best

what I have found (and I'm new to the XTC) if I go low structure and run the gain where I need it, (around 2 to 3 o'clock) the amp sounds a lot fuller, then me running in high structure, at 11 to 1 o'clock. That's me lower gain guy. I think the sweet spot on the gain pot (regardless of H or L ) is in that 1 to 3 o'clock spot. Great amp !

Before I modded the amp I have found that the most open tone in Red is with the gain around 10 o'clock (Structure H, I have never used L). The more the Red Gain was turned up the more compressed the sound have become.

Now, after modding 1st & 2nd gain stage, where by rasing cathodes resistance the bias of those stages is set lower, I can turn up the gain to noon and get a liquid sound with acceptable level of compression.

Regards, Andy :)

Aside from any mods to the circuit...

To the OP, "L" is used with lower volumes, "H" is used when things are cooking. Just IMHO, YMMV.

I haven't had the amp long enough to know, whats best for me. I'm already starting to move in the H territory but, who knows.

Isn't the L to H foot switchable? If I am thinking of the right thing then I use both, If I need a little more push on L for example on my strats then I add a compressor to bring the gain up. L on blue is great for low gain blues type of stuff IMO.

No, it isn't. You may footswitchably drop a gain only with boost.

Regards, Andy

When I've had XTC's (1 Classic and 2 101B's), I've always preferred the L setting. Then again, I don't play metal anymore.....
