Egnater has put a smile on my face yet again!
I usually start testing modules with my McCarty, but decided to go with the strat this time based off some talk about the module on these boards.
At first I noticed this module sounds and feels very different than the others. This module is not as forgiving and really puts out what you put in. It wasn't an epiphany from the first strum, because at first I thought it was a little stiff and was foreign to me, but as soon as I was playing for more than 5 minutes I became head over heals with it!
The COD has an incredible amount of midrange without being nasally. The low end accompanies the midrange very well so that it still sounds very full (I liked bass boost on 1, as I do for most modules). It also has a GREAT high end harmonic content. I usually don't like a lot of treble in my sound, but this manages to have a lot of treble and presence without being ice picky or causing aural fatigue.
It has a lot more gain than I had expected too, but it's a very very open almost high gain sound in channel A, with a bit more compression and gain in the B. I had this notion that it would be like this soft spoken, light and smooth over drive sound, but I was surprised and then very pleased as I turned this thing up: it has some uncannily appealing "hair" or grit and will give you just raunchy, unapologetic blues and rock leads and rhythm. Depending on the pickup selected, it can "stringy" on top but still full on the bottom. I think it was Nick who said that it sounds like SRV already with a tube screamer engaged, and I see that. It really is just a great american rock sound. This thing will cut through a live mix like nobody's business.
To me, this is not a module that you need a boost with. I think you set this one up and then roll down volume and or tone knob for more sounds, rather than setting than trying to boost it up. It sounded great on all my pickup selections, and for once I actually liked the bridge pickup with the S1 system engaged on my american strat.
In my hands, this module is by far the most unforgiving, but I actually really enjoyed that. You really get out what you put in. I think it's going to be the module I practice with the most since it really shows all of your playing in spades. I can see people not bonding with this module as well since it is very bold and somewhat stiffer. It can be far more aggressive than I thought it would be, but not metal or numetal aggressive; classic - american rock aggressive. Of course you can also set the gain lower and it responds really well to the guitar's volume and more importantly your pick attack. Very very dynamic. I think it also shines at making a lower gain sound still be very full, and sounding like the amp is really working, unlike the sound you get when you lower the gain on a traditionally high gain amplifier (which can be cool in it's own right). It will give you a killer crunch. Like I said this thing has a ton of mids, and at one point I even turned the mid knob almost all the way down, and you would never guess that's how it was set given how much mids were still coming out of the speakers (v30s)
In short, this module just makes ME want to play hard and really dig into the guitar. It cleans up well, and for the first time I found myself toying with the tone knob on the guitar for more sounds, but all I want to do is play it loud and punish my strings. Tomorrow I'll give it a try with my McCarty and Singlecut and see how it sounds with that. For me this has been another great egnater piece, but I don't think it'll be for everyone either, unlike some of the popular ones like the SL2. I'm very happy too because before it came in I was wondering if I was just having GAS, and if in the end I'll just EQ it to sound like the way I have my other modules, but this one is very unique.
This really is a module that you "play" the way you would play an instrument. It's unforgiving but that fight or struggle makes it really rewarding. While playing I found myself looking over at the amp, almost grinning to it, the way that I would to your drummer when you are feeding off each other. Franky, it's not my main sound, I'm really glad it's in the arsenal because I have a fun time playing it.
