I was wondering if there was a way to get this tone:

It's just so evil and raw, and for the life of me I can't quite seem to find it on either of my Ubers. Anybody have any ideas for dialing it in? I'll also repost this in the main forum.

I'd say,

Presence off
Bass higher than you would normally like
Mid cut down a lot
Treble to taste
Gain between noon and 2:00
Master and Channel volume low to keep it tight and not so compressed as compared to pushing the amp

7-string or a down tuned 6-string

I think that's more of a low gain clip with a close-mic set up. High mids, moderate presence, definitely high on the bass, and gain LOWER than you'd think. Remember, anytime you mic a cab up, the gain you hear in the room is about 50% through the mic.

But then hey, I haven't slept for 36 hours so what the hell do I know

I might try to record it with less gain next time.
Yep. I find I get way more character with less gain when I've got a mic up against the cloth. I think it sounds great in the room - but then I don the cans and I think it sounds WAY too fizzed out and gainy. I'm always amazed at how much I have to pull it back to make it sound more rich and full compared to what's happening in the room.

Always fun screwing around no matter what

Not into heavy music any longer but I bet I could get that tone with the right pedal into any of my amps.

It's funny, it's the opposite for me. It sounds better through the microphone than it does in the room sometimes.

Oh, hey, sure.... I agree. But the deal is, with MANY of today's amps, why the hell do we need a cheapass pedal in front of a $3000 head to make it sound "right"???

Man...I toally agree! :2thumbsup:
You shouldn't have to....but...
I only use a J&J OD because I sometimes like my clean to have some grit rather than super clean and that is about it and with the Electradyne I sometimes like to be able to kick it on during a song to make the 'Dyne more saturaated without having to walk over to the amp and adjust gain. It is all about having options at your feet. :)

In reality I am looking for that tone you are after, but keep experimenting.....plus a pedal would be a hell of a lot cheaper than another amp. :)
