I was very happy with the stock sound of it...but like any guitarist searching for the ultimate tone ... I had to experiment.
tried various tubes in various positions but was still left wanting...So I looked at my old Marshall JMP-1 which I loved but tought it
was time for an upgrade (hence the Eggie) ...I had a no name tube I found in position v1, this is the only tube in the JMP for high gain.
At first I simply put that same tube into v1 of the eggie and figured that this would do it...it did not ...so I reversed my thinking and figured out that this great tube should go in the last gain stage of the eggie and then go to lower gain tubes as I drop down the slots ..v3,v2,v1 ..
I used a jj83 in v3, a jj803s in v2 and a groove tube chinese in v1... lo and behold the amp sounds like an XTC on steroids on chanel 4 and a hot rodded Soldano on channel 3 .. I really dont use 1 and 2 ..Where I once had the gain maxed out on 3 and 4 I now have at about 2 to 3 o'clock..I am completely happy with it now and cant wait for our saturday night gig...

i just ordered for my tourmaster :

a set of RUBY 6L6GC STR

Sovtek 12AX7-LPS Vacuum matched for the PI
JJ ECC83-S / 12AX7
Tung-Sol 12AX7
Shuguang 12AX7-B

i will switch out the TS, JJ and shuguang to see what sounds best to me.

i still need to figure out what 2 tubes to get for the cathode follower v4 postion and the contour position.

Isn't it funny how subtle, yet so critical they are?
I've just figured out that one of my tube configurations kicks ass with my SG, and does not sound so great with my Strat.

New on the TM4212 scene, have been lurking and I find this site to be an apparently excellent Egnater hang out. Appreciate the varied points of view. I am going for a vintage-new rock/bluesy thing, if it matters.

Any one try the Tubestore's Preferred Series 12ax7 (7025)? Ordered a few the other day, going to give them a try.

I also like the Tungsol 12ax7, I notice many folks here seem to favor JJs and Rubys.

By the way, I convinced myself that I should have extra power tubes so I grabbed a set of SED Winged "C" 6L6GCs.

Wow, I am getting in deep already! Somebody stop me, or else suggest more tubes to buy!

hahghaha

those ruby tubes are from GC. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ruby-6L6GC-STR-Matched-Amp-Tubes-212030-i1125583.gc?source=4TEM8XOC u just cant beat that. i hope they sound good. they've gotten good reviews from what i can see.

a blue jewel from http://www.mojotone.com/Home?search=jewel

and the above tubes i mentioned for the pre.

i talked to doug from dougs tubes also today. he recommends :

"V4 and V5??

Don't think you need high grade tubes there. The Ruby HG+ is the highest grade Shuguang 12AX7 available. We use those in V1-V2.

If V4 is a cathode follower, avoid russian preamp tubes in there like the Tung-Sol and LPS. Go with a Penta Labs 12AX7 in V5."

and then later

"The Penta 7025 is a new chinese offering with a welded RCA style plate, same as the Ruby AC7. It's low in microphonics and very sturdy, warm and articulate."

im in the process of rearranging my cellar (we just moved in, and shit is EVERYWHERE, but i actually CAN play. just not happy with the current setup). hopefllly i'll be done when the tubes get here.

OK, maybe a little more spice in the mix, only two more:

Penta 7025F, possible placement - 3rd gain and V4 cathode follower
Sovtek LPS matched, possible placement - V8 PI

That is it, darn it! Done with tube purchases for a while!

Checking out a Budda wah pedal any way. :D
