I traded another forumite my ERect for his EG3/4 for a couple weeks. Well I finally got to try it last night and I'm very impressed. The best analogy I could give the EG3/4 is to take a SL2, give it a shot of whisky and a pack of Marlboros and that's it. ;)

The biggest surprise was the "3" side of the 3/4. I expected it to be similar to the "A" channel of the SL2 and it was not. This channel has "the mojo". Much more gain than A channel of SL2. I found myself playing Neil Schon's Journey riffs from back in the 80's. This channel is just fun to play on. It cleans up extremely well just by rolling back the volume on my guitar. I could honestly see many guys using this channel for the entire night of a rock gig.

The "4" channel starts where 3 left off. More gain and saturation and a liveliness that felt good to play. This is a good match to be the lead channel with the EG3. The note definition was great and it was slightly darker than SL2 B channel which I am a fan of. I really love this module. I don't want to rush to judgement and say I like it better than SL2, but it is right there with it, easily.

Jeff, I am officially a "module whore". There may be another M4 in my future. I've not even tried Vox or BMan yet so I think I'm in trouble.

Isn't it great! I played my entire band career in the 80's and into the 90's with EG3 it has been Bruce's go to mod for years! Velvety yet has a hint of best description yet..Marlboros! Hey wanna let us try out the Axe fx?

Sure, I could lend you the Axe-FX. I have to space it in between gigs so let me check my band schedule and I'll PM you.

I really want to check out the eg3/4! That's probably next on my list, along side with a BMAN

And you definitely need to check out the Vx, it's incredible! It's such an incredibly fun module to play, reacts super well to pick choice. My footswitch cable got damaged in the mail (not from the egnater guys) so I've lately just stayed on the vx and had a ton of fun getting a bunch of different tones out of either channel.

+1 on the VX. Channel B is almost high gain! Great module.

The EG3/4 is my go to module. If fact lately I've been running 2 heads together thru different cabs, MOD50 with 3/4 and Mod 100 with first gen single channel EG3 and EG4. Let me tell you, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a straight amp sound so much. On a recent gig I swear I had goosebumps on my arms a couple of times it sounded so good.

If you already haven't, you must try the EG3/4.

Nice to hear some love for this most favorite module of mine! The EG3 is a foogin' killer rhythm tone for me. In fact, I have an old unfinished tune with EG3 on the rhythm guitars at mypsace. It's the tune called "Mob Squad." Thanks for reminding me that I need to finish it.

Jeff, just lemme know if you need an Axe FX loan.

John, could you tell me what is used for the lead sound on "Mob Squad" (esp. last solo part)? I totally love it, one of the best tones I've ever heard! Surely, the killer playing helps also...

Is there much difference between old single EG3 or EG4 and their corresponding channels on E3/4?

The newer 3/4 sounds a little smoother with a little more butter in the mids.

John, MOB SQUAD sounds incredible! That rhythm tone is great! Love it.

Just when I thought I was dead set on an SL2...

Which module (EG3/4 or SL2) would you say has a crisper top end? Like, more individual note definition?

The word that keeps scaring me off is "buttery" and "smooth". I don't want anything too buttery or smooth for my high gain rhythm. I like lots of note definition, so that big chords will sound detailed.

I would definitely say that the SL2 would have a "crisper" top end. The EG3/4 is very rounded which is why it works so well for leads and for filling on more rhythm space. The SL2 would probably be better in a two guitar type of situation when it comes to riffing.

Thanks for reminding me about this tune and the tones! (drums - Marco Minnemann, and I need to record a real bass as it's just MIDI right now). The rhythm guitar is just two or three layered EG3 tracks. There may be an EG5, but I don't think I had it yet when I wrote this. The main lead tone is the SL2 - my favorite for rock leads btw. (Later is a fuzz and SL on solo.) The EG3 is more smokey, browned out and saturated than the SL2A or SLs with gain pedals. I can't tell you about the EG4 though. I don't have one. i don't really know why either...

Nick, I think it would be a good choice for the stuff I heard on your myspace, but your recorded tones there sound great to me as is!

How does the EG3/4 module compare to the original IE4 Channels 3/4? I read the EG3/4 is voiced closer to the IE4 Channel 4, but can be custom ordered and voiced closer to the original IE4 Channel 3. I like both Channels on the IE4, but feel that Channel 3 has a little fatter tone to it that works better for both rhythm and solos. I have to say that Channel 3 on the original TOL series has been one of my all time favorite tones and feels great too. :)

Regards, JD...

sounds like a party

I've been so stuck on using my SL2 that I haven't really used my EG3/4.
When I read this thread I decided to pull it out last night, no not that, my EG3/4, and was blown away by the B Channel, really great smooth distortion and alot more sustain than the SL2 B Channel.
To my ears the EG3/4 A channel sounds a little darker compared to the B channel, maybe need to dial it in a bit better?
It is a great module to mike up thru a PA!
