So I got those Steven Slate VSX headphones for fathers day and finally got a chance to actually use them yesterday for a riff challenge. This was interesting. Usually when I dial in amps for recording I use my monitors or saved settings from playing thru a cab. For this test I decided to dial in my Fryette Ultralead from scratch using headphones only (used the virtual archon room), no boost, then hooked up my Master Effects PMEQ in the loop and just kept chugging and dialing in with headphones. Thru down some generic riffs to fit the beats then dialed in an ampeg bass sim.

So I got to listen to it in my car on the way to work this morning, not bad. Could use more bottom end and I think I had the bass just a bit too loud but not bad for a first quick mix with headphones. This might be the way to go for me. My recording space at home sucks to the point I can't really trust my mixes thru my monitors. Anyway curious on feedback from you guys on how the mix sounds from whatever your listening thru, enjoy!

Been considering those puppies since they dropped bro'.

My monitors are awesome (Opals), but I'm going to be forced to move to a much-smaller place at an unspecified time (landlord can't say) and as much as it hurts me to say it, I'll probably have to resort to using h'phones exclusively.

I've got the Waves NX stuff but based on reviews and whatnot I've a feeling Slate's offering is better.

Heard many stories of dudes not realising they were still wearing the 'phones, thinking they were listening to their monitors.

Sorry to hear that man... I rent too and the thought of having to move is fkn nightmare bro....

As for the VSX stuff.. Honestly they are not fking bad Monkey. I seriously made it a point to not use my monitors at all and dial in everything from the ground up with just headphones and those virtual rooms. I liked the Archon room the best and I got to say having nearfield, midfield and farfield speakers was really cool for dialing in just about everything. Overall im just looking for something I can mix accurately and and trust it wont sound like shit on other devices lol...

Goodbye.

Trilogy of TERROR. WTF. I'll be sleeping with two loaded pistols and a rifle by my bed for the next two weeks. That tiki doll has irked my my entire life.

So funny man, not to many people remember the name of that movie lol. For real though that shit freaked me out too lol

Just on a shitty phone here at the moment but drums sound a bit too up front. Overall I like the mix though, it sounds like real instruments and raw, not this over produced stuff we get now.

Yup, Ive been told by many I have the drums a bit too loud in the mix, but I think that is more of preference from me lol. Definitely something I need to play with more. Thanks for the feedback Kapo!

FWIMBW the drums are pretty-much the right level on my 2012 cheese grater speaker.

It's a tinny, mono speaker with f-all low end so I can't speak for bass level (can't hear it at all!), but if anything, geetar could go down a tiny bit or drums come up a tiny bit. Definitely close-enough to be acceptable 'though IMHO bro'.

As I said, it's just on this speaker, but I've become used to it over the years. :dunno:

I got a little speaker on the way actually, was recommended for testing mixes too. I think what you said is key though, I just need to get really used to something. ?

A lot of people use reference mixes in less than stellar environments and still can turn out good results..I guess it is all about learning how any environment sounds by having a baseline.

Listening on my Yamaha studio monitors, cymbals might be a touch loud, everything else sounds pretty balanced. i have been interested in these headphones for a while.

So far so good, definitely a good alternative for anyone who has a crappy recording space like myself.
