I've been considering buying a Fish and starting a rack rig later this year. I've searched the forum and it seems that the Fish brings about some very subjective feelings and opinions. And it carries a high price tag when you consider that the Mako pre has four channels and is less than half the price...I've had a 101B on loan for a bit and really liked it, but wished it was maybe just a bit closer to the Marshall realm. Ya know, that Bogner chew and smoothness, but with a bit more "kerrang".

Would the Fish get me there? I really like what I'm hearing in the TM demo, but how much of that is the VHT 2150? I would probably be using a Mesa 50 watt PA if I buy a Fish.

Is the tone of the Fish a lot thinner than a 101B? It seems a bit thin in some clips. Please tell me anything and everything that I should know. Thanks!

If you were to use a Marshall Power amp I would say yes. The Fish I had (wish I still had) reacted very well to different power amps. I found it brighter and more upper mid focused from the XTC. It is still a darker mid compared to a JCM800 by far, but definitely had a bit more karrang for lack of a better word than the XTC. A lot of guys only like 1 or 2 channels usually, I play a lot of different styles of music and loved all the channels, with pedals and experimenting you can cover a lot of ground and have what I think is one of the richest sounding harmonic preamps around. Also unlike most preamp/poweramp scenarios I did not get the disconnect with the Fish I got with other preamps like the Triaxis, MP1, Axe FX, etc.... It felt more connected to me like an amp head does.

Hope that helps some and good luck!! Also damn the Barzini, we need him here, times are tough and the global economy is not the same without him!!!

Cool, thanks for the reply! I'm going to check one out later this summer.

I've often wondered the same as you; would be great to hear some comparisons of a Fish with different Amps for A/B testing....probably would require someone with very knowledgable AE skills to pick out the differences given how compression usually affects things like YT videos, etc. Overall, I did not like my XTC Classic or my XTC 101b - both custom shop deals. Opted instead for Goldfinger 45, which I find to be stellar in all regards. -zt

Hi folks

I'm new here and I own a fish preamp and I'm very happy with it

This is a demo I made using a JEM 7V-WH -> Fish Preamp -> VHT (Fryette) black beauty poweramp -> Torpedo VB-101 (used as a loadbox/cabinet and mic simulator)(marshall 4X12 cab if my brain is ok) -> plugged in S/PDIF in my fireface 800.

Here is the same setup except for the guitar and the cab used
a musicman EVH and a mesa boogie 4X12 rectifier

I hope it helps... If you have any questions feel free...

Thanks for the clips! I'm actually leaning more towards a 101b now. I was going to start
looking for a nice used one, but now I need a new MacBook. My daughter spilled soda in mine and the motherboard is fried. so I'm not sure I'll be getting a new amp now.
