After trying the Moderns at Namm I really felt compelled to buy a set to see how they compare.
I've been an active guy all my guitar life. I've tried many, many different brands and wasted a bunch of money. Never was completely satisfied. Always went back to my EMG 81,85,89s. I prefer the older hard wired ones from the '80s. They seem warmer and less harsh.
Bought a set of moderns and loaded them in one of the SGs. Wow, really blown away by them. In the "active" mode They are so much more clear and articulate than my EMGs. The bottom end is about the same but just more open and clear. Dare I say not muddy?
Really cool that they have an active and passive mode that's activated by the push pull volume. The passive mode is a nice feature, just takes away some gain, slightly different voice as well.
The active mode is pure brutality. Very percussive. They are hotter than an 81 but don't feedback like some of the other hotter pickups I've tried. It was a really strange feeling having more gain but not all the bullshit associated with it. I felt as if I wasn't fighting the guitar for what I wanted out of it. Pinched harmonics were easily obtained.
The other push/pull was wired up for a high frequency cut. It's really subtle but a welcomed addition. After my ears were fatigued from playing an hour or so I switched over to this mode. Really cool. I guess you can wire them for a coil split instead but I wanted to try this feature. Think I'll leave it.
Anyway, playing wasn't up to par in my book but I was distracted by what I was hearing! (Lame excuse!!)
