Anyone here had any experience with both Flamed maple neck/boards and Birdseye maple neck/boards?

What are the differences in tone between the two? Any other info?

Im trying to decide on woods for my Musikraft San Dimas build, and would love to hear some opinions/thoughts!

Care to share any specs, Dan? Flamed ones look better, IMO. :student: You gotta get a reverse headstock for that!

if you are going for the old school Charvel spec and feel look no further then a birdseye neck with a maple or rosewood board. They feel and sound incredible. As far as the tonal differences between the two its been way to long since I compaired them and I could not give you a good example.

Well im still trying to decide what woods im going to use for the body and neck.. Im tempted to go with a Swamp Ash body and obviously either Flamed maple neck/board or Birdseye maple neck/board.

22 fret Strathead neck with: 6100's / 1-11/16 nut width/ 2-3/4 neck pocket/ 16" Radius.
Charvel body (possibly Swamp Ash) routed for H/S/S with a recessed OFR.

Yeah man, i havent ordered anything yet though.. maybe not until a few months from now atleast. But in that time, im working out my best options ya know?

Im so indecisive its fkn rediculous :D

1 vote for the swamp ash body, the ash has this tonal thing going that really brings this upper mids thing going that sounds awesome. I love my swamp ash GMW with maple neck :)

I also suggest a Custom in the bridge to start with, very nice pup imo.

Good luck with the build!

Got some pics of the GMW Scott??

Also how many pieces is the swamp ash body on your GMW?

I see that Musikraft necks are official Fender replacements so I assume they're good? :) How long are the waiting times?

One piece, I have a pic somewhere that Lee took while we were going over the build but cant find it right now

I also had the PRS style 5 way pup blade installed to split coils for strat type tones, Custom and Jazz loaded.

I much prefer Alder to swamp ash. SA has this high end spanky-ness to it that's perfect for blues, but not so much for metal IMO. Alder is a much more neutral sounding wood that won't color your tone.

IMO of course ;)

Man that looks amazin!! Is it definitly worth spending the extra $$$ on a 1piece Swamp Ash body? Musikraft offers 1 piece, 2 piece, 3 piece etc!

Il definitly have to look into that PRS 5 way switching.. sounds really versatile! :)

Dan,

Musikraft does offer Quilt or flame caps! I think you missed it!

As far as what wood is good for what, It highly depends on your rig. I have swamp ash and alder and they both sound excellent.

Agreed. Swamp Ash looks pretty, but I personally just don't dig the tone. Alder with a Maple Cap FTW!!!

I also love my solid Maple Kramer

I am a firm believe of one piece for energy transfer, IMO it creates a single plain for energy to move throughout the body much easier than a glued billet of wood. All just my opinion though, I have been told to go pound with that thought

Here is how my guitar is wired........

WiringHum1.jpg

Position 1 Coils A and B are accessed (noise canceling)
Position 2 Coil A only
Position 3 Coils A and D only (noise canceling)
Position 4 Coil C only
Position 5 Coils C and D are accessed (noise canceling)

Just gives more options and was not an extra cost :)

Ok well to be honest.. i rotate between a few different amps right now. Boogie MKIII mainly and soon il have an XTC 101b here.

My other GMW Superstrat has an Alder body, Maple neck w/ Ebony board. That guitar sounds punchy as hell..

I was honestly considering going with the same woods for this build, but iv heard from several people that unless you get a thick slab of ebony, it can be prone to cracking and other problems. Thats why i was looking at other wood combinations..

Thats funny.. i have the exact same wiring on my GMW, but on a 3 way blade switch and im missing the position 2 and 4 thats all :)

Il have to hookup the 5 way on this next guitar!

I was reading over at TGP and some were speaking of cracking ebony boards, I guess I do not have enough experience because I have not heard of this issue  Maybe guitars sitting in cases unplayed for a long time? If it is played and oiled maybe twice a year I do not see this being an issue but as stated maybe I just do not have the experience.

Ive had an ebony neck and it cracked because a friend of mine who borrowed my guitar kept it in his basement. They are very prone to cracking if you don't watch the temperature.
