Hey guys, so I've been spending a lot of time dialing in tone for the next batch of songs we're recording, and recently I gave the Fredman Technique a try. Long story short I'm pretty happy with it, honestly much moreso (specifically in the mix) than when I was blending various things. I've never liked the 57 before! I put together a comparo of different cabs in a mix to get an idea of the things, wanted to share. What do you hear?

I’ll listen when I’m on my monitors. I usually like the off axis about -6 or so db

I tested from unity down to 0 on the off axis mic. Since I'm triple tracking (and this is a Coliseum), for me, it was too thick until I got the OA mic down to at least -20, and I ended up on -30 as my favorite balance. I used to pay more attention to the tone when I was dialing in mic sound. I still do, and now, I'm weighting clarity a bit heavier since all my gear has good inherent tone.

I like the V30 best in your clip. Since you mention wanting to focus on clarity, one thing to try is micing the top speakers. Or if your favorite sounding speaker is on the bottom, turn the cab on its side so it's at the top. See if that helps reduce reflections and further clears things up for you. Depending on your room it may not be a subtle difference either. What is your center track level at?

Interesting idea, thanks. I have already mapped out each speaker in all my cabs to know which sounds best, to me at least.

I generally record each track around -6. When I L/C/R them, I reduce the center track -2.

The V30 has that classic snarl and mid grind that makes the mix sound more aggressive. The G12T-75s are similar, but sound more "nasally" to me. I dislike the rest besides the Greenbacks. I have that same Marshall cab, but the slanted version. It's my favorite cab to plug my IIC+ into. Perfect blend of aggressive tone and warmth. After using warmer speakers for so long my Mesa V30 cab sounded way too harsh. I put 2 Creambacks in it in an X pattern with the V30s in my Mesa 4x12. You should try it out, rounds out the sound to where it's still punchy but doesn't feel like an ice pick to the ear drums.

I can't believe I'm about to type this... but I think I prefer the B-52 mix out of all of them.

The V30's sound great when it's just them but I think they grab too much attention when the rest of the band comes in. For this particular mix overall, I think the B-52 mix works best. It has the best blend of thick chug and cutting slice.

All the cabs sound good in their own way though.

I have my creams on top and 30s on bottom in a Splawn straight 4x12.

Interestingly, that POS B52 cab actually killed it in the room. I was shocked at how tight & percussive it was considering it was back ported.. Purely comparing dollars, that thing was $60 compared to a used Mesa cab at 10X that..?

I do tend to agree that the V30 cab has the best tone, and, I know what you mean about it grabbing the attention- at least in this mix. It would likely need to be pulled back in mastering on a real track.

I dunno gotta say the B52 cab sounded best to me. The RB and GB have a similar high end that I am not a fan of. The 75's sounded ok. The PV cab man that reminds me of seeing every local metal band back in the day...
