Friedman Runt 50

How much gain does the Runt 50 have? Will it get to HBE levels on its own?
 
It has basically the same amount of gain as the BE channel of a BE100. HBE channel is an added preamp tube for more gain.

put an eq pedal in the loop with some low mids bumped and a boost out front. all the gain u can handle

dave has said on tone talk that the runt is truly "in between" BE and HBE in gain

He also said it's his favorite amp in the lineup.

It's really just a hair more than a JCM800. But, I've got a Hot Mod in mine, and it's a totally different animal now. Still sounds like a Runt, but has more harmonic detail, girth and punch. Plenty of gain on tap as well.

bet that sounds great! Getting the runt 20 a couple years ago got me out of pedal world and into the (expensive) habit of flipping amps.

Its a great great amp. I prob should have just stayed with it lol

Haha - I feel like i'm where you were a couple years ago. Just sold my runt 20 to explore some other more expensive amps...
 
I had a Runt 50 and it was a killer amp. Loved it. I only got rid of it because I got a deal on a Morris Perplexed. IF the Runt had a better clean channel, I would buy another one now.

You tried it?? That simple $220 device releases the beast, for sure. The Runt is more raw sounding to begin with, now it is a thrash metal chug machine, (but certainly doesn't have to be with the onboard boost cut, as well as the gain switch on the Hot Mod). Lots of variety.

I've got a PT-20 V2 inbound, so we'll see how it stacks up.

No, haven't tried it, but there are a couple clips of this being done. For the Runt, I'd much rather go that route than try and add another 12AX7 to a PCB
