First off, I must say that I absolutely Love Andy Fuchs. Not only is Andy one of the best amp builders around but he is also one hell of a nice guy and a lot of fun to hang out with!. Talk about a guy with major talent and zero ego!!
Now With that said, I went to Andy's Shop to pick up a 2 channel Fuchs Frost 100 amp. I took the bad boy home and plugged it in and immediately realized the potential of this amp!! Let me back up a bit and mention a few things. I don’t usually care for 6550 tubes and I don’t usually like JCM800 type/based amps. The only reason why I am mentioning this is because now that people know how cool I think Andy is, I wanted everyone to know that this review is going to be as fair and unbiased as they come even though I think the World of Andy. Ok on to the review.
Channel one sounds like a really good modded marshall with balls. It has that midrange honk going on and plenty of gain on tap and a killer grind. Fans of modded marshall tones should be very happy with this channel. The amp is very tight and responsive. Channel 2 also has that modded marshall thing happening but it has more of a scoop in the mids and it has more bass and more gain on tap. If channel one doesn’t have enough gain for you then channel 2 should be right up your alley. This amp really wasn’t designed for clean but you can get a cool clean sound if you keep the gain down and the master up.
Both channels sounds great at low volumes but the amp really comes alive when you give it some volume! The tone controls on the amp work a bit differently then the norm in that the midrange knob will effect how the treble responds and the amp takes on a different vibe as the volume goes up! What might not work for you at a lower volume might come alive as you turn the amp up. The amp is simply amazing and tough for me to describe. Now that I mentioned that the amp comes alive with volume, that is not to say that it’s bad at TV volumes!!
As most of you know, I live in a condo and I can’t play amplifiers at a loud volumes. The first thing I look for in any MV volume amp is to see how responsive the master is and how good the amp sounds at low volumes. For some reason I wasn’t expecting this amp to sound good at TV or speaking volumes but I was wrong, dead wrong. It sounds killer and you can definitely get some kick ass tones at low volumes especially if you match this amp to a decent cab.
One thing that I should mention is that this amp is capable of getting many different tones. I think people will be surprised that the frost is not just a metal amp and you can get some killer vintage type sounds.
It took a little while to figure this amp out but the Fuchs Frost is one of the sickest and loudest amps that I have heard in a while. I should mention that the amp is very responsive and it responds to you own finger tone. That is something that I feel that gets lost in a lot of high gainers. All I can say is this amp floored me and has changed my opinion of 6550 tubes. There are some killer brown sounds and violin sounds in this amp for sure
Andy Fuchs and the Frost 100 Rock!!!
All the Best!!
