Man, I'm so tired of swapping amps, ect.... Tired of getting something I like, then swapping it for something else, then something else.

SO, in my ever so irrational mind, I think I've decided to back to a rack set-up so when I get that feeling of not liking my tone, instead of searching for yet ANOTHER amp, why not just keep a handful of killer preamps, and just swap them? (or in a perfect world switch with a bradshaw)

I love my XXX, but I'm not jiving with it lately.....go figure huh?

SO....I may just sell the sucker get me a VHT or Mesa Power amp, I've got a nice ADA MP-1, and just start collecting preamps.

Although I WILL keep my Marshall and Slo clones..... I built them myself, cant get rid of those. :D

Thoughts? Advice?

Dude, I LOVE my wet/dry/wet rig and the way my Marshall VM and my Mesa 2:90 Poweramp interacte is magic. I have 3 effects processors now too, G major, Lexion PCM 80 and an Eventide Eclipse. I know there are higher end effects available but I honestly cant have much better tone then I have now, it is insane...............I am using a 4x12 for my dry and 2-2x12's for my wet/stereo. So its not really all that much more gear to haul around and hell its worth it for the way having that "killer" tone inspires me to play, longer, better and the effects give me ideas and expand my creativity to create riffs/songs to take advantage of all the different tonal effect options available................John

The trick is to find the "core" tone you love, in my case its always been Marshall and in particular now its the VM.Then you find a poweramp that adds what is "missing" from the core tone. My case is that Marshalls are known for their killer mids and Mesa's are known for their bottom so get them together and I am beyond satisfied....................

yea I REALLY want to run a stereo set-up, Mesa (Studio/Quad/Triaxis doesnt really matter they all kick ass) and ADA 3TM or possibly Langner if I could find another one. just one fx processor like the G-major, I'm not huge into fx but they are nice every now and then.....

I've only dabbled in non-rack stuff. (jc120, egnater seminar amp, mesa blue angel, traynor ycv40)

all i can say is, gear kicks ass in general, but racks are my passion.

I've always had a thing for racks, just never the time or cash to get into one, BUT, I think now that I'm a little more secure in life, I can safely take the plunge without killing myself, and be able to have a very versitile rig, which I need for my schizophrenia tone-wise.

Funny stuff, I'm finding myself leaning rack-ward... I've started running my Axe-FX Ultra 4-cabled so I have it straddling the preamp. I can feed FX before the amp, run the amp's pre, or just run the Axe-FX straight to the power amp, all on a per preset basis. The band I'm with really doesn't like the idea of me switching setups... they really got attached to the Splawn, but I'm noticing that I can dial in whatever I want with the Axe-FX, I might see if I can fake them out and get out of hauling some extra gear. :)

I know................

insane is more the correct word. :D :loco:

Yeah, great idea, but versatility is the Key... your gonna need a few different pre's to justify the move, ya know?? otherwise whats the point... and that could get a little X-pensive...... but, really, who wouldnt want to have a Studio sized rack with all kinds of Pre's an a few different power amps an play A/B games all day long, looking for inspiration in any number of different sounds... f#n AAAYYYY!!!!
Good Luck, an start playin the Lotto!!!!!! :D

My buddy plays a mesa boogie studio/fifty fifty setup and it rules. I like his rack gear.

I'm actually looking at several....

Langner DCP-1
Soldano SP-77
ADA MP-1 3TM
Randall RM4/Egnater M4
Mesa Triaxis

I'll probably end up with the Randall, Soldano, and ADA, unless I can find the Langner first. :D

what power amp are you thinking of using?

Right now I'm thinking about the Randall RT250 and RM4 and have the RM4 modded so I can use the Egnater modules as well. But eventually in addition would like to pick up a VHT to go with one of the other pre's I mentioned and go with a W/D/W set-up.

Hughes & Kettner ACCESS Preamp is awesome or SOHO ---> re-did the Kitty Hawk Quattro
Hafler T3 or Triple Giant, so many good pre-amps out there. My next upgrade is to a VHT power amp and retire my Peavey.

-------------------------------
FJA modded Peavey Rockmaster - Pre
A.R.T DST 8080 - Rack mount Head
Rocktron mAXE - Pre
BBE Sonic Max
QSC 300 Watt - (clean) power
Peavey Classic - power
I have 2 other rack setups but those don't get much use.

I still find myself going back to my VHT Deliverance

I do it with a number of foot pedals. I start with a custom made HBE capacitor selector, a Mojo Vibe, A Menatone VOS, A Menatone Red Snapper, A Frantone Fuzz, a Keeley Modified Blues Driver, a Menatone Blue Collar, A Dunlop Tremelo, a Deluxe Mem Man, a Peterson Tuner, a modified GE7, a Sonic Maximizer, Tube Reverb and finally the 59 Guild 20 watt amp. In my own way I am doing what you want to do but with pedals. I get tons of flavor and variations of tone with this setup. I always gig with a Strat and a spare from my collection of 19 guitars. For acoustic very simple, Martin D-18 and D-15 for a spare through a mike no effects. The good thing about pedals is they are cheap and easy to move in and out. Also for a complicated setup its really light and easy to move.

Well I think I've got it worked out,

Randall RT2/50
Egnater M4 with Egnater modules
Egnater M4 with Randall Modules
ADA MP-1
TC G-Major

I think that should more than satisfy any tonal changes I might want or need.

:D

TC G-Major depends if you can deal with the cheapness of its components, should sound great though

Get a VHT power amp.

I will eventually, but I cant afford it at the moment, to get this up and running I'm gonna start with 1 M4 and the Randall.....I like the Randall for the ability to run 2 types of tubes on each side.... :D

Eventually, it'll be the Randall with the Eggies, and the VHT with the 3TM or Langner.

:D
