I have always liked Bogner tone and had a 101b and a XTC Classic and both were just exceptional amps. I ended up wanting to go with something heavier and ended up with a Diezel Herbert which I will say is one of the best amps I have owned for heavy music. I got an offer on a Suhr guitar I had for sale to trade even up for a Bogner Fish about 2 months ago. After pairing with the right power amp for me I must say I am totally amazed at how great the Fish sounds. It has the openness of the XTC Classic and has the dark chewy mids but also can brighten up a bit. After talking to Rob at tone merchants I think the Shark channel sounds like the plexi mode should sound on the 101b. It does not get as heavy as the Herbert but it covers so much ground tonally I was able to move my Herbert and not miss it at all. With the Mesa 2:90 power amp and deep/modern mode it gets very heavy and articulate as well as just down right mean on the brown channel. The strato channel with deep mode off is 80s heaven and the shark channel setup after talking to Rob sounds very plexi like, as well the clean channel is very good. All around very dynamic and responsive preamp and I love it with the 2:90 power amp.

The funny part of the story is this is the amp that I am writing all of my current music with and everybody around me says it fits me and the music I am writing to a tee and I never even really wanted the Fish, never gassed for one and just got it on a fluke of a deal on a trade thinking I would sell it. The mid content is just to complex and rich, it has great bottom end that hold together well and the highs are perfect. Add in my Eventide Eclipse for some effects and the overall tone I now have is just amazing to me.

No one amp is for everybody and I have gassed for plenty of amps and tried quite a few. I have realized for a while that I dial in most any amp the same for my type of playing and my tastes. Some have more mids, more depth, in other words each amp is its own beast and has its own character but as a player it is nice to find an amp that allows you to express yourself and hear your music how you want it to be heard.

Okay I am finished gloating, thought I would share what I find as a cool story!!

Sounds cool man. Glad you found the right amp for your sound. I've always wanted to try the Fish pre.

Interesting story...the Fish is often overlooked for what people try to get out of an XTC-style amp...I sold my 101b after getting the Fish, since it, IMO, did what I had been trying to get out of the 101b. It has a great openness that resembles the 100b and has this amazing bloom for lead playing...so fun to play lead on and so versatile. Could you share how you are setting up your Shark channel?

Thanks! That really helped wit me gas'n for the Fish.
Cool story, I find the 20th A Ecstasy is like this for me.

Sorry to dredge this post up again, but after reading this and talking to Rob at TM last night, I think I'm going to go the Fish route and run it through the power section (fx loop) of my Marsha, rather than pursue a 20th XTC. If it doesn't do what I want, I can always sell it and go for the XTC after that...but I'm thinking Fish / Marsha for a couple of reasons:
~ 1 master volume (Marsha) when swiching back and forth between Marsha (pre) and Fish
~ 1 line out (Marsha) for wet fx; it'll handle either Marsha pre or Fish regardless; won't necessarily need a mixer
~ Marsha power section is very similar to XTC's
~ 1 less head :D

The only issue is that I'll have to get some sort of cabinet switcher as I want the Marsha to go through M75s and Bogner through V30s. And I realize that there are some cool features on the 20th that are really worth having (excursion, boost, etc.). But hey...this is all research, right?

Thanks again to TTosh and everyone else who chimed in on this post...great stuff, highly informative, and it gave me (at least initially) a great solution for my rig.

That's not such a bad idea. The Marsha has a very similar power stage. Although I've never played through a Fish, I can hear a lot of 100B tones in the Fish (from clips). If you could set up the two to be swichable you would cover a lot of ground.

I can chime in here and say that the Fish pre is magical with the 20th XTC power section, so you should be pleased with the Marsha/Fish combo. They are basically Marshall power sections from what I've heard.

Why did you have to go and say that?

Yeah, I'll be switching the two via a RJM RG16 and a Liquid Foot Pro...so I'll have Brown Eye (or HBE depending), Marsha Simple Clean, Marsha Simple Clean + EQ pedal, and the four Fish channels running through the Marsha fx loop. The Marsha line out will handle all wet fx into a stereo power amp (RT 2/50). That's seven different tones right there.

Speakin of which, after talking to Rob, it seems like forgoing the strato channel for a second brown is the way to go; probably going that direction as well.

Well I don't have a Fish yet, but from what I understand, the Strato channel is basically geared towards single coil pickups, adding a more robust low end -- which I have nothing against -- but from a bridge pickup standpoint, I'm a humbucker guy, so my thought process is two Brown channels at different gain levels might be more usable. I've read that others have opted for that mod as well. My thought is that I could have two Brown channels set up like an XTC red and XTC boosted red.

Again, I haven't played one yet, but from what I've read and heard, Brown is the flagship channel of the Fish, and if Strato doesn't apply why not have two Browns.
