I have a line on an old Marshall cab (has been refinished with purple like my earlier post). The cab I got earlier from this guy has G12-65's in it. This one has G12M-70, T3577 cones with speaker date code KR28 - Oct 28, 1983.

What say you guys? The 70's are getting some not great reviews from what I have read but with the caveat that they are good for metal guys. I play with ton o' gain most of the time.

What does the brethren say, good bad, go, stay?

IMO those speakers should be essentially free. Not popular and not valuable. If you like them cool but you shouldn't have to pay much for them.

For me, I'd almost rather have it empty and priced accordingly.

They suck balls.
This. But.....

In my quest to find more 65 cabs, I've bought many used from GC that had the 260w badge, only to find the dreaded 70s. Ugh. But there was one cab, that I actually plugged into before I pulled the back off, and I though they were 75s because they were scooped but not in a bad way. Sounded OK, thought I might keep it as a changeup but then I opened it and there they were, G12 M70. Ended up returning it but it was the only cab with 70s I could have lived with. All the others sounded like chapped ass.
Go ahead and plug into it, there are some that actually do like them. It might sound like the one out of 5 that I had that sounded OK.

G12M-70, well known as "the worst" speaker Celestion ever made. There are no recone kits for it, they're that bad. They were discontinued for a reason. If you have four speakers to put in it, good, cuz you'll want them pretty quickly after you hear them in person.

Consider yourself advised...from someone who make the same mistake you're about to make. Or as was posted above...the speakers should be free. Pay for what you think the cab is worth, unloaded.

Horseshit.

Just opened up my old Laney to find these bad boys. I've been standing beside this thing for 30 years.

I'd agree, that if you want to throw a 57 on it and chug like you were only-for-the-weak.... This box is looser than your mom's taint on a recording.

But in the room it's a very full sounding cab. Lots of fun.

I’ve played 6 cabs with these and 5/6 were just terrible. But one cab actually sounded decent. But still far away from most other Celestion that I like. This cab was dark and seemed like it would be nice for bluesy rock more so than HR/metal. But that one decent cab was from 83; I bought it hoping for 65s as it had a 260w badge

They're the Covid and Cancer of guitar speakers. You don't want them.
I think it's the application friend. Every band member I've had since 91 has said it's the best cab I have.

I kinda prefer my Marshall with V30s (esp for recording) or my old Boogie 4x12 halfback. But for thump and girth, this box really rocks. Guys were telling me in the fucking 90s that the G70s were shit...and maybe it's just my cab that rules and everyone else's sucks.

I won't even sell it.
