Hi,

I am new to Rig-Talk. But I have been eyeing the mod amps for over a year. Basically I am looking for an M4. Right now I have a VHT fifty/CL (#60 ever made), that I am looking to unload towards am M4. The VHT is on the chopping block because I mostly play at home, and my ENGL preamp through a Carvin DCM150 is much better at reasonable levels. I am thinking about adding an M4 so that I have two preamps for jamming, and I have not heard one bad comment about the mod amps.

Couple of questions for you guys.

How often do M4s come up used?? How much do they go for?? How much is a mint 50/CL with EQ worth?? And finally is there an Egnater module that sounds similar to the VHT??

Thanks

I have nothing but praise for my M4. I LOVE IT!

They come up used maybe once a month or less.

A fully loaded one can fetch $1700 Plus.

Mint 50CL with EQ = IDK, $1300?

Egnater module similar to VHT? Not exactly. The Erect would probably be the best bet since it is fairly tight, and sounds way more tasteful and full than an actual Mesa Rectifier. The EG5 can be tweaked pretty closely, but it will still be a little more seemingly saturated than a VHT.

I am looking at an SL2, and Erect for starters, and I am torn between a T/D, or Bman for cleans. I want to be able to get a pushed sound for the B side of the clean module which I have heard that the T/D is just pure clean.

I had a Dual Rectifier for quite a while, and I liked it a lot, but I just grew tired of it, but from what I have heard the Egnater erect is like a Dual rectifier, only it is more versitile, and not as undefined.

FWIW, the Bman is the only Egnater module I've ever sold.

The cleans just weren't "happening" through my guitars and gear. Stiff cabs + humbuckers + stiff VHT 2150 power amp = unflattering to the Bman's voice. I NEED the sparkle of something like the T/D, the Randall Blackface, or the unbelievably inspiring chime of the VX A channel

The bman is heavenly with a strat, a mod 50 head, and a greenback cab though.

+1 on the BMAN. That is the only module I've not regretted selling!

T/D is the only clean/semi dirty module Ive sold. ;) BMan is going nowhere!

Both T/D and BMan will give a medium gain on B channel. The BMan is tighter whereas the D has more sag. T is a very pristine clean. BMan is a warmer clean.

All person preference. Neither is better or worse. They are different for different applications.

I've heard people compare the Randall KH-3 to teh VHT due to it's inherent dryness I guess, unfortunately I've never owned a VHT to compare.

I've bought two M4s used..they come up every couple of months or so.

Yeah, they turn up occasionally.
Last month a loaded M4 came up on ebay for $1800. I bought it hoping to get back into Egnater.
I'd tell you how it is but...

UPS lost it :gethim:

They come up from time to time, but I've usually been a bit late on most of them...patiently waiting for the next one as well...

Thanks for all the advice on the clean modules. I think that I will have to do a bit more research, and I am going to start selling a few things to get the money together, and keep looking for a partial trade.

Its official my VHT is up for sale. I am also going to sell my Jackson RR3, and Fender Champ 12 to fund my intrduction to Egnater amps!!!

It's possible that a straight up Deluxe module would be best, not the T/D. That way you have the clean DLX sound on A channel and you can pushed up tone on the B channel. Or maybe a Vox would be the ticket.

Good call, the DLX has a great clean on channel A and can do a bluesy overdrive on channel B. I've never tried the T/D or bman though, but I think eric has had all three at some point, maybe he could add something? Vx is my favorite module I have, but if he's between T/D and bman I think vx is a big departure from those kind of sounds. It does do a great overdrive though, it can easily do rock rhythm on B.

The big difference between the T/D and DLX is ChA, and that the module just has a little tighter feel to it across the board. The DLX has a naturally compressed type feel. It's a very focused, chimey, sparkly clean tone on ChA. As the Gain gets higher, it will get a little "grit" around the edges (which I love). The Twin has more of a big super high headroom clean tone. Very very pretty and such. But I always need to have a slight compressing on it to make it feel like I really wanted to. With the DLX, it did that naturally. It does bluesy tones perfectly.

I love the VX too. :) It has a killer clean tone that's a bit more open than than the DLX (not as compressed) but has this chime to it...that well...is so AC30 :). The B channel is what I love on the VX. It's awesome for that mid-gain rock stuff. I use my VX on my Mod50 a lot w/ my EG5. Perfect fit!

For me the bassman it wasn't the module of choice for me. I like sparkly cleans like the Twin or Deluxe or VX. The BMAN was just too dark...and too saggy for me on cleans. Not spanky enough :).

I'm actually thinking about selling my M4. T/D, SL2, Erect, and COD. Great piece, but I've got way too much gear for a part-time hack, and need to thin the heard a bit. Purchased new at the first of 2008. I'll entertain offers, but I'm not looking to give it away. If this should be posted in another section, I apologize.

No problem, if you are really serious about selling you will get more offers and attention if you post your own thread.

Hey Dan,

I figure you'll probably do your best to try and sell it loaded, but if you decide to break it up I'm interested in the the m4. I already have all those modules, the SL2, Erect, COD and a DLX (which satisfies all my clean needs).

If you are willing to sell the m4 unloaded, let me know what your asking price is. I have cash sitting in my paypal account so I can pay immediately. Just to be upfront, I am on a wait list for an m4 when they start production again, so if I buy used I wouldn't want to spend more than what they cost new.

thanks,

Diego
