Lookin for a 2x12 cab for home use.see sig for amps that it'll be paired with.

Never played a ported cab.whats the pros and cons?

User opinions welcome as well as basic knowledge as i'm a noob.

I really wanted a marshall 2x12 but not made out of MDF.

Am also lookinginto avatar cabs as well.

Thx.

The 2x12 G-flex is a great cab, I have had it and a 4x12 for five or six years now and wouldn't part with them. The 2x12 can be a bit bass heavy so depending on the amp you either need to get it off the ground or turn your bass down a bit from the norm. Other than that they are built like tanks, nice balanced speakers that don't have the spikes like the v30's or others which may or may not be a good thing to you. Customer service is as good as it gets. I have yet to come across any other cabs I like better.

Great cabs but they do their thing best at loud volumes (as is the case for any ported cab that I've tried). That doesn't mean it won't sound good for home use...its just not the perfect match for that application IMO. The stock speakers are actually very good, and you can usually pick them up fairly cheap ($300-$350).

As for pros and cons, here's my take:

Pros - More/bigger bass, "larger" sounding than a similar non-ported cab (2x12 can have the thump and girth of a normal 4x12), more mic'ing options, great for unmic'ed gigs
Cons - Cab sounds VERY different as volume is increased...need to adjust amp accordingly, can sound too "woofy" and loose in the bottom end if not dialed in right, can be difficult to mic certain models (G-Flex should be fine though as ports are aligned across bottom away from speakers)

I have recorded with mine numerous times and micing isn't an issue.

Cool...that's what I was thinking with the alignment of the ports on the G-Flex. I have a CAA ported 2x12 with the ports by the speakers which requires careful mic placement to avoid too much boominess at stage volume.

The only issue I've had with any of my 2 x 12's (Splawn, Avatar, Jet City) is that in a live setting they simply don't move as much air as a 4 x 12 and thus you get a different tone print. When you mic the cabs this issue is diminished, but you still lose stage volume. The only place I haven't had this issue is with my Splawn Quick Rod and Splawn 2 x 12 with Small Blocks. That cab just KILLS!!! You MAY get the same effect with a Recto 2 x 12, but I haven't tried.

Cheers,

Cheers,
I always believed that to be the case until I tried a few ported 2x12s...the G-Flex and CAA both move some air and sound nearly as big as a 4x12...in fact my CAA sounds better/bigger to me than any of my 4x12s.
