George Lynch and the Egnater SL?

Hey guys,

I am a huge Lynch fan and always pay attention to his gear. He is a big Plexi fan. That said, more and more...I have been using less gain and going more vintage even for heavy rock. I like the clarity. For example, I am liking my SL2X channel A which is like a JCM 800 like tone....which is killer clean and clear for rock to high gain.

That said.....I am thinking of picking up an SL and using this module with various pedals - getting back to my roots. Any guys out there comment on the SL and how it responds to pedals? I will most likely use my Xotic BB and pick up a tube screamer type pedal like the Sparkle Drive or the Cusack Screamer which is supposed to be as good as it gets for screamers.

How are the lead tones of the SL? With a pedal?

The SL clips in the Clip Collective thread is gone.

Thoughts? I know this has probably been covered but I couldn't find any posts that helped me with this.

Thanks all! :)

I always thought the BB through the SL was awesome. The SL is a VERY flexible module, IME.

Thanks bro.

I love Plexis, huge and warm so i wanted to use it with the BB to give me hard rock and then shut it off and either use a Sparkle Drive boost for leads or an EQ/volume boost in the loop for leads.

I have an Egnater SL+ module that I love for all kinds of Blues/Rock stuff..rhythum and leadsw34

Just from hanging around the board - the SL along with the VX - although not the most hyped modules - are the one's that most often come up in the "I could do an entire set with just that one module" type of comment.

So, just like the brand new, dual gain, midi switchable JTM45/JMP50/1987 Lead Plexi that never existed, the SL seems to be in the "necessary" category.

The SL loves pedals, a nice tubescreamer type pedal with the level maxed and the drive to taste makes for great lead tones. The SL feels softer and a bite squishier than the JCM800 style mods like the EG3/4 and the SL2 and is definitely midrange centered. Best served through greenbacks IMHO.

What do you like so much about the Greenbacks? I know the fav on the board is the CL80/K100 combo but I am ordering Eminence Super Vs.

I played a 4x12 loaded with V30's for a long time with my old band, since I always used British based tones for the most part, I figured greenbacks would be a logical choice. Plus I heard plenty of clips on TGP that I liked, so picked up a quad of Heritage Greenies from Avatar speakers and popped them into my new Egnater 4x12. I switched my MOD50 back and forth between the V30 cab and the Greenback cab, the V30 cab sounded much "harder" and more cutting, not as much give to the notes with a definite upper midrange slice the cut through a band mix great but did not really feel necessary as I was the only guitar player. The Greenback cab had the upper mid emphasis of the V30's shifted downward towards the mids and low mids and felt a lot spongier and "bigger" for lack of a better term. They took up more space in the mix and felt nicer to play overall. I've stuck with them ever since.

Thanks for the explanaition.

Did you say you tried the Super Vs? I heard they are better V30s as are the WGS Veteran 30s.

I am also the only guitarist in the band and your comments about upper mid cut, etc are a big reason why I think I am preferring the stock SL2 and stock EG3/4 over the X mod.......because I think stock sounds bigger and fit better with a one guitarist band.

Stewboy, the Sparkle Drive is kind of the perfect screamer with an Egnater. I am not sure the Cusack would be as good. It so depends on the amp!

Never tried or even heard of the Super V's until now. IMO calling something a better version of an original is fairly silly. Like when people say "its like a JB, but without the midrange honk". Well, thats what makes a JB a JB, same goes for V30's, Shure SM57's, and Tubescreamers. They all are known for their forward midrange, you take that away and you have something different not something better.

Regarding our common attachment to EG3/4, I think you would like SL's lead tone. I think it has enough gain without any pedals. One of my fav mods.

I want to be able to do classic rock to 80s and 90s type hard rock...not metal.

I was going to use Sparkle Drive or Cusack Screamer for leads. I believe George Lynch had used the Cusack for rhythm as well. I thought of using either my Xotic RC Booster or BB for juicing a bit. Another alternative is the Naked OD by Tone Freaks....but it may not have the flexibility of the RC Booster and it might provide more dirt than the RC can. It only has the tone knob and some pedals like that lack bass.
