i'm kind of torn between the SEDc 6550's the electro harmonix and wondering if there are any other tubes that i should be aware of to make this change

thanks

both the ones i mentioned particularly are considered very very good from what i can tell, but if there's something i've missed or whatever, let me know

the VH4 (which is awesome as is with the el34's in my opinion, but should sound even more bas-ass according to "people" i've talked with, and even from what i've heard) has a 100k bias mod if i am saying that correctly to better accommodate the 6550's and bias them etc etc from what limited understanding i have

any input besides "stick with the el34's asshat" would be much appreciated,

thanks again peace

I have 4 SED 6550 "C" in my Hebert and they f***in rock

As far as I know Peter does not recommend using 6550s any more,
but during the time they used them they used SED 6550 "C" (again as far as I know ;) )

ohh i don't know how i forgot that, that peter used the c's in the vh4's before him deciding that he didn't like it running so hot,

so i think that may be the answer, thanks!, other than that i hope the mod i have done to this amp will do as it says and really handle the 6550's proper like,

thanks again

I have SED Winged C 6550s in my VH4 & Herbert. They kill it big time!!

well it's done, i'll get them in both of mine as well, a matched sextet and quad coming right up,

actually it will take time for that money to roll in but whatever

bought the quad for the vh4, soon i'll get a sextet, i don't know why i didn't immediately think of the SED 6550c etc but whatever peace

Little tip from my side: I use 4 6550s C and 2 el34 in the herbie - these combination slays

Had all EL34 before, switched to all 6550s and now have the mix.
Best compromise between midrange growl, bass-thump and clarity, but thats just mo ;)

Do you have EL34 in the side or middle?

I didn't know this one.. is there a mod to handle better the 6550s "hot bias"?

Just as a comment, some time ago Mizati and Mark2C posted here that the 6550s biased only at 60 mA have also good results with no "heating problems" on the VH4:

Best!

Figured I'd chime in, I biased my SED 6550s originally at about 75 mA and they definitely got really really hot, Pauly says he biases them much higher and while it runs even hotter he says hes never had a problem, however I just can't tell a sonic difference between my current 60ma bias and the 75-80ma bias, however I CAN tell a difference in heat...

Yeah, don't exceed 60ma. I run my sextet of KT88's at 58ma and couldn't be happier.

Outer pair, but that does not make any difference. All 6 Powertubes work all at the same time ;)

Have mine biased at 60 mA. Havend experimented with other Bias because Peter said to do so when he still recommended them.
