gibson stop bar tail piece

I recently took all the strings off one of my gibson les pauls recently, and was amazed how light and kinda cheap it was, do they make a heavy duty tail piece, like in heavy in weight, because I would assume that would give better sustain and tone?
 
they may make them in brass. Heavy & brighter. Check out the Tone Pros stuff. They are the same weight...but have a ton more sustain due to the way they mount. :thumbsup:
 
The best LP tailpieces are supposed to be the aluminum ones as on the Historic Les Pauls and original 50's Les Pauls. They weigh next to nothing--when I put one on my postal scale, it literally did not move the needle on the scale.

I replaced the stock tailpieces on my '89 Standard and '95 Classic with the light weight aluminum models. I can't say I noticed a huge difference in tone--it certainly did not hurt it. It did lighten up the guitars by close to a pound.
 
For what its worth, i had the TonePros bridge and tailpiece installed on my 78 LP Custom. Recently my tech did some work on my guitar because i was having some issues with it, and he put the original stock tailpiece and bridge back on the guitar..

I actually noticed improvement in tone and playability with the original bridge and tailpiece back on. The original parts were lighter in weight than the TonePros replacement parts too.

So my opinion is that if it plays and sounds great with the original bridge/tailpiece, leave it as it is :thumbsup: They sound great!
 
I had a lightwieght aluminum tailpiece on my 89 standard for years. A few months back I replaced the lightweight one with a brand new "Gibson Pure" regular tailpiece. I recall the guitar became punchier and more focused sounding with the new heavier one - of coarse this was in a high-gain scenario. I preferred the new heavier one and have left it on since. Can't say it improved the tone or has more sustain, just more tighter/focused sounding . Also running a Cusom Custom PU FWIW.

The lightweight talpieces might be more open/airy sounding.

Not sure where Gibson is sourcing their bridge hardware lately, but I am sure is was German made Schaller parts in the 70s/80s/90s Les Pauls. Are Tonepros Gotoh?

On my 81 Silverburst, I needed to replace the saddles as they were filed all to shit. Went ahead and got a Tone Pro's replacement bridge and tailpiece in vintage nickel. Sturdy, locking and nice looking stuff. Ordered from Jerry at Luxtone.

the schallers that Gibson used in the 70's were much much lighter and brighter sounding than the tailpieces they use nowadays
