They're pretty close, I'd prob be happy with either. But the BW seem to hold together a little better with gain.

From what I've learned there are at least 4 SD pickups that are all based on the JB. The Distortion is a JB with a ceramic bar magnet instead of an alnico 5 giving it the same EQ curve with an even bump across it. The BW is a Distortion with 3 ceramic bar magnets shifting to a stronger mid presence. The Invader is a BW with oversized poles shifting to bass.

There seems to be quite a few others that are also the same sans magnets. Interesting, because if someone has any of these on hand and wants to try another it seems like all it would take is to loosen the baseplate screws and swap magnets. You wouldn't even need to completely remove them or detach the pickups from the guitar. What's funny to me is I don't care for the Distortion IRL, at least with my amps and the guitars they're in. But I love the BW :ROFLMAO:

Interesting info there. I thought some other pickups that I've liked had the 3 ceramic magnets, maybe the Dirty Fingers or the 500T. The thing I like about the BW in the clips is it has great mids without sounding honky/squawky (like the Nazgul did at times) and the top end isn't as messy as some other high output ceramics (up there where the string noise is).

Swap? How about jam a couple more in there to see what happens? Is there a BW with 4 magnets?

I noticed that too. I watched the BW/Distortion shootout blind and only peaked after it ended, and I was surprised that I found the Distortion more nasally and the Black Winter more even. I had thought with it's mid presence it'd have a rolled-off top and nasally quality, but apparently not in relation to some other pickups.
