Got about $700 to spend on an all-tube high gain combo - suggestions?

I need a good 1x12 combo, that I can play in an apartment, that sounds good at low volumes, and won't piss off the neighbors!

I've looked HARD at a Classic 30, but not having one local to try, I'm not sure it will get metal tones. For what it's worth - I have a Wylde OD, and MXR 10-band EQ to boost, and tone shape.

I'm into old-school thrash, Gary Moore, KD/Mercyful Fate and Iced-Earth type tones.

I've looked at:

Mesa F-30
Triple XXX 1x12
Various Marshalls
Laney LC30, (loud!)

Used Mark III? Used Studio .22+? I hear the 22 is great for thrash tones.

The Classic 30 is a great amp, but it probably won't get you those tones without a boost (which you seem to have covered). If that's the route you want to go, I'd take your EQ and OD to the music store with you and see what kind of tones you can get.

I've played the F30 combo and I wasn't that impressed. It can get heavy, but it can also be pretty flubby. I prefer the 6L6 power section in the F50. But I was plugging straight in; with a boost and an external eq, you should be able to dial out a lot of the flub. FWIW, it's a much more modern sounding amp than the Classic 30.

I've hated ever XXX combo I've played (not the heads, though), so I don't feel qualified to comment on that :P

Used 5150.

You can get those under his budget numbers, but then you have to buy a forklift to move them...

I'd go with a Mesa Mk III combo.

For 700$ there is not so much on offer, it's kinda like a gap between the 500 range and the 1000 range.

For that budget I think it'll have to be Laney, Peavey or Marshall - maybe a used combo. I don't think you can have Mesa or 5150 (1x12 combo?) in that range. Personally I'd try the Orange Rocker 30 too, although that's more 80s than recent heavy.
