The other guitar player in my band brought me back some lit yesterday on the Tourmaster when he played one at GC. He liked it overall for the price, though he definitely prefers my MOD 50
He said the cleans are GREAT but the overdrive is voiced a little too modern for his liking even without the modern switches engaged. He also didnt think channel 3 had enough gain to be a high gain rhythm channel and was expecting channels 3 and 4 to have similar amounts but a slightly different mid voicing (for rhythm and then leads). FWIW he plays a Shiva.
I thought Channel 3 could use a bit more gain too. But I prefer a modern voice amp so I liked the gain channels over all. I liked the cleans too. I don't know if they're as good as the cleans in my Mesa Road King II but it's tough to really A/B without the amps being in the same room. I was impressed with it's tone at low volume too.
Well Channel 4 has more gain but I don't really need a classic rock crunch channel. Give me the option to have two high-gain channels if I want it. That said, if you dime the gain, you could get away with it. I'm not saying it's not a high gain channel but I'd like more there. If it could go to 12, then it'd be fine.
Its hard for me to comment since I havent actually played one, but in theory I wouldnt understand having 1 clean, 2 mid-gain, and 1 high gain channels. For me I always want 1 clean, 1 mid gain and 2 high gain channels (1 for rhythm and 1 for leads). Shouldnt that be the standard for modern channel switching amps?
From what my friend said, channel 3 has similar amounts of gain as the SL2 channel A. For me, thats just enough (I dime the gain on the module), but I could see it being problematic for some people if thats the truth and Im not talking about only metal players either.
Well I wouldn't say Channel 3 is "only" a mid-gain channel. It's a high gain channel for sure. I'm not even sure it has all that much less gain than 4. But it feels like it does. It could be an EQ thing that to me, makes it feel a tad stiffer or tighter than Ch. 4. I'm certainly not complaining about it.
I'd probably have ordered the amp already but I'm seriously considering just ordering an M4 and then worrying about paying for it when it's ready. Thing is, I like heads so the MOD50 is nice too.
