Long video but truly worth a listen if you have the time. Some of the first part of it I already knew but about mid way thru learned a lot of stuff I didn't know.
It's actually worth a listen even if you don't like Trunk as apparently he has some stories that he never shared before when Sykes was alive and some good insight into Sykes and adds many personal stories about John that I never knew.Would like to listen, but have a hard time listening to ET.

I remember on Tone Talk, when they had Bob Rock on (and he confirmed the Black Album was a C+), Bob was asked about the best guitar player he ever recorded....no hesitation, John Sykes. Did everything in 1 take.....pro's pro.
I don't remember; it was a couple years back i thinkAny idea what Episode number that was?
Really? I didn't think that at all and I don't really follow Eddie Trunk but I'm not sure what all the hate is about really as far as I'm concerned he just shared some cool info on John that I wasn't aware of and that he had first hand knowledge of so what am I missing?Trunk trying to "suggest" he had "tips" for JS to "help him with his career". Fuck off ed.
The guy isnt 48 hours passed and et straining to be relevant on the back of a LIVING LEGEND.

I don't like Trunk at all but I somewhat agree with him on this. I mean WS, Coverdale, JS were on the verge of superstardom and he gets booted after all the work is completed. To this day, Coverdale knew what he had in the album and he wanted it all for himself. JS is right there about to grab the gold ring and gets booted, I think that would have been hard for most everyone to deal with. Then he's got to hear and see that success for the next two years - that'd make anyone bitter. As Trunk alluded, much of the reason why he hated the industry. To note, Coverdale would never even approach anything like '87 again either. Crazy to think three of my top five favorite guitarist are Vandenberg, Sykes and Campbell - all in WS. And as much as I love Viv and Adrian neither fit that band like Sykes.Caught this today..
He says he thinks JS never got over being booted the WS, but DC fired the whole band not just JS.. DC was like 40 around the 87 record where JS was still in his 20's.. I think DC thought he was kicking around with WS for a long time with minor success and he didn't want to be told what to do with his band but it was still a shit move I think.
JS kept his publishing for the 87 record and was able to live a good life I think. He didn't have to deliver for Amazon.. LOL

Yep! I'll always say that Coverdale Fd up big time with his decision. Sykes took some of the spotlight away from DC, and he couldn't handle it. That band, if he hadn't fired them was off to superstardom.....instead, like you said the replacement players didn't gel very well imo. If Sykes had stayed, they'd have been huge for another decade IMO.I don't like Trunk at all but I somewhat agree with him on this. Then JS releases an epic masterpiece of an album that should have put him over the top yet again and it does little in the big scheme of things. I don't know how I would have reacted, that's for sure.
BTW/ I was lucky enough to see Sykes with WS opening for Quiet Riot. Now I loved QR at the time, they put on a really good live show as Rudy, Carlos and Kevin worked the stage as good as anyone but WS just sounded huge that night with Sykes and Cozy. Glad I got to see the guy.
Which is insane because he then goes and gets Campbell, Vandenberg and then the biggest guy in the biz at the time with Vai. As you said, little doubt that duo keeps WS relevant for 10 more years even as music was changing. I've read where DC never really got along with Sykes but that's all his side but as was said, he canned everyone. It was a money play and then DC used the excuses of everything else through the years. My opinion at least. As I said though he cooked his own goose with the next album, panicked and went and hired Vai who couldn't have been more of a fish out of water on that album. I mean his playing on the Vandenberg written songs was great for Vai fans but the missing piece was Sykes.Yep! I'll always say that Coverdale Fd up big time with his decision. What a colossal F up by Coverdale.
