Greenbacks vs Vintage 30 (Clip Inside)

So am I hearing one track left with 57 and one right with 906 through greenbacks first then V30's? Regardless, the answer for me is the greenbacks. when i hear the V30, it sounds more hollow to me. That said, for metal, you might want that hollow tight approach vs. the body of the greenback. The solution I think, would be to combine them, greenback Right through the 906, v30 Left through sm57. That will fill it out nicely. This is a very common combo for a reason.

I used both mics with each of the speakers. Two tracks=a total of 4. Sm57 panned 100% left right and the 906 panned 9 oclock/3 oclock
the 57 is louder in the mix than the e906. I tried a combination of K100s and the vintage 30 with a 57. Panned left right, just like you mentioned and i liked it. Will check it out with the v30/greenies
Did you ever use a 421 on guitars? I need to buy one dammit :)

V30's, they are the best speaker for recording metal IMO. They have all the right frequencies for it, which are evident in that clip, those upper mids you need to get that defined, grinding tone.

Honestly, going mic crazy isn't always the answer as you might find you come right back to what you know... the 57. right now i am experimenting with a 57 and a cascade fathead II. I like the way the fathead fattens things up as would the 421 but i still lean on the 57 for 80% of the sound in my ears when adjusting levels and listening through monitoring headphones. I also played with the 57/906 combo that you have here.. I liked it. Really could go either way but the 57 does have a bit mroe sizzle.

For that tuning...i like the v30s recorded. But am more a greenback guy.

I prefer the Greenbacks. Not sure why but lately I am not at all a fan of V30's. I used them exclusively for years. Don't know what changed for me.

Thats the V30 MF, as used in the Marshall Mode Four cabinets and also available as the Hellatone 60L ?

Greenbacks hands down. V30 sounds like you're listening through a paper towel roll. They just have a gross sounding lower-mid hump that I hear in every recording of them ever.

Here's another interesting comparison, greenback on the left, V30 on the right.

I like both, but the Greenbacks sound better. These or Classic Lead 80's will be my next speakers.

Answer...Splawn Quickrod ;) Much better with greenies than v30s

Really depends on the amp. Greenies sound good with most amps, V30s have a love/hate thing going on depending on the amp.

In this clip I prefer Greenbacks but in general for myself prefer V30 for most things, and Greenbacks for mellower things. The more classic rock, shred fusion type stuff. V30 for themore aggressive stuff. That doesn't come across the same way in this clip though for some reason.

Which V30's are you using? The mesa, the Chinese or the Marshall?

Yeah, but the combination of a Sm57 and a 421 is just a classic. Unless you have tried it, you will never know:)
Never heard of the fathead.

Thanks everybody!

Yes it is. Regarding the Hellatone i have no clue. Is it modelled after the Vintage 30MF?

It's a Marshall MF280 cab with english Vintage 30MF
