Hello one and all. My name is Glen, and I'm a guitarist with gear issues:-)! I come to you with somewhat of a dilemma. Over the years I have used many amp and cab combinations and have been mostly happy with the results. However, I find myself at a crossroads and require the help of people who are in the know. A brief background....

I have always used 100w head and 4x12 cabs. The heads have either been 2 or 3 channel and I have usually found somewhere near close to that which I hear in my head as my ideal tone (aren't we all in the search for our tonal goals?). However, as I have grown older I came to the realisation that 1 head cannot do it all, (this is no reflection upon Diezel amps at all by the way, just a personal observation that I've made for my needs over the years). And here is my dilemma. I am currently using a Mesa Dual Rec but am not getting all the tonal qualities I need from it. It is fantastic for all the high and mid stuff but I need something with more bottom end and substance to fill the sound out more. I was seriously considering the Herbert.

As die hard Diezel fans I am sure that you can all give me valid and useful info on how these two amps would mix together. Please do not take this the wrong way and think that I am just some kid who's only been playing for 5 minutes and is trying to start an argument about the comparisons between Mesa and Diezel. I have been playing for 15 years and am truly at a loss for what to do because over here (England) it's very difficult to find, let alone try out, new amps that are worth talking about. My only other option was a Bogner Uberschall but I cannot test either of these amps so your knowledge and help is required.

All the best and thanks

Glen

So what specific tones are you looking for and what kind of music do you play? What kind of tunings, guitars, etc.? This will help me to help you.

Please contact James at Diezel UK.

He will help You a lot !

Hi,

I'm based in Liverpool and have nothing but good things to say about James at Diezel UK, he was very helpful at Music Live taking the time to go through all of the amps and cabinet's. He also replies to any email I send aswell, the best customer service available.

I eventually went for the VH4 and could not be happier, it's epic! I was using a Dual Rectifier (3 channel) which, at the time, I thought was superb but the difference is startling. Personally, the Mesa takes a lot of tweaking to abtain a good sound (something the Diezel doesn't require) but it is very brittle and fizzy within the higher frequencies, not to knock the Mesa as it can sit well in a live situation.
The VH4 is so organic sounding and unbelievably diverse covering all musical styles with an amazing low end, super tight. I may be waffling here but I couldn't reccomend Diezel enough, whichever amp you go for, as i'm sure you never look back!!!

Also try Sounds Great in Manchester as I believe they currently have a Herbert in store, there's also Manson's aswell.

I have a Mesa DR collecting dust in the closet. It and the VH4 do not mix. I use a VH4 and Bogner Uberschall which go together like ham and eggs! Recently, I just bought an Elmwood M90 and will be gigging with it and the VH4 together this weekend. They both go together well. I don't have a Herbert (but wish I did). What you will likely find with the Herbert is that it would be the only amp you needed. From some of the clips I have heard, it will be great on its own. Mesa DR's have no depth compared to any of the Diezels. The DR was good in its day for one thing, but there are many amps out there that will make the Mesa sound like a SS amp. Another component is cabs. To me, the Mesa Recto cab did not justice for my VH4. Get a front loaded Diezel 4x12 when you go Diezel, or if not. They make many amps shine like a diamond in a goat's ass!!! But, my Elmo and Uberschall sound great through the Mesa cab. go figure  .

Of course, this is only my opinion. But, with $20,000 worth of heads sitting here, I have earned it

we have a Diezel Herbert - Mesa DR mix in the band, and i like it really. We had a Diezel/Engl combination in the past, and that did not work.

Aye, give Jamie a call. If you're in the London area you can arrange a demo of all the models.

FWIW I'm surprised that you want more low end with the Dual Recto - I used one for years, and it handled highs & lows really well. I bought the Einstein and had a massive amount of fun EQing that in the middle.

One thing that I did do to my Recto was to load it with JJ KT-88 power tubes. That really opened it up and I can recommend trying out! Still, ABing against the Einstein the Recto had it beaten with the 'kick', but tonally everything else went the Einstein's way (clean, mid gain, overall high gain tone, definition, etc). So, the Recto got sold on.

When I first heard the Herbert the nearest thing I could compare it with was a Recto, but just more... It is strong tonally across the spectrum, not just in highs & lows which was my experience of the Mesa. Obviously the voicing may not be your thing - it isn't a Mesa, and it doesn't feel like one either - but that's why it'll be cool to demo.

I was talking more of A/B/Y'ing the heads together, not two different guitarists. I could see that going OK for you. But together, the sizzle of the DR killed the depth of the VH4.

This is just me though. Someone else may like it.
