just wanted to ask if anyone has tried groove tubes either pre-amp or power amp. i have just purchased a herbert and i'm ready to try some tube testing. groove tubes seem to be popular in my area but not so much on this forum. any opinions would be great! thanks!

Hello, I am a newbe here and just scrolling down through the topics I read yours so here is my reply: I have a VH4 that I re-tubed the power amp section w/ Ruby EL34B-STR's after I purchased it. I went with them after I sent a letter to Peter Stapfer at Diezel asking him what his favorites tubes were for the type of music I play. I was not dissapointed, the amp came equiped w/ winged C 6L6's from the prevoius owner and I was not happy with the tone, at least not with the high gain channels. After a couple more months I wanted to change out the pre-amp tubes (I did not know how old they were) so again I sent an e-mail to Peter at Diezel and he highly recommended Groove tubes 12AX7-C's (old china's) as he described them. Once again refering to the type of music I played. I purchased them and installed them and at this point I could not be happier with the tone and performance of my VH4. So with all of that I can reccomend the Groove Tubes 12AX7-C's. They sound a little darker than the Ruby 12AX7's that were in my amp, they take some of the gritty edge off of the high gain channels...especially ch. 3 but the combination of the Groove Tubes in front of the Ruby power tubes works extremly well for me. Hope this helps you.

Ruby and Groove-Tubes are just relabeling the same Chinese tubes. They basically test/select/relabel the best ones and charge a premium for this service. Regardless, all the tubes are made at the same factory in China. You can order unlabeled Chinese tubes from Dougstubes.com that are tested/selected as well.
