hi,

does anyone have tested the GT 12AX7 M Mullard reissue in Herbert
in V1 position?
or would be the jj ecc 803s be better?

thanks
klaus

Klaus,

the JJ´s are better concerning microphonic noise

I wouldn't recommend the GT!
I had two of them. One got terribly microphonic and squealed like a pig in my JTM45 after a few days of use. The other one runs OK but is still very microphonic and noisy so I replaced it with a JJECC803.
I think if you put one of those in the V1 position of an high gain amp like the Einstein, you will get much bigger problems.

I don't know if it's just me, but I made only bad experiences with "reissued" tubes like the Tung Sol or the "new" Mullard tubes.
My Tung-Sol EF806S I paid 35€ for went bad in my tube mic after a few weeks and all I was hearing was "popcorn".
Basically, they are all made in the reflektor plant in Russia that also produces the not so good Sovtek line...
It seems to me those guys just try to use big names to sell poor quality tubes. (Just my 2 cents though)

About the JJ803:
Those tubes are fine indeed, but they have lower gain then the regular JJECC83 or the Chinese ones. Again, I don't think those are suited for the V1 position because of the lower gain and thats what most people like in an high gain amp ;) .
I had a NOS telefunken ECC83 in V1 and the gain is comparable with the JJ ECC803 so a bit lower than normal and i preferred the high grade previously installed. On V2 position, this tube really shines. It lowers the gain a bit but it has a nice edge to it to cut well without being harsh.

Best,
Stefan

thanks, i tested them both these days.

both were not too microphonic, but the built in ruby 7025 high grade i liked best.
sounded more open, more agressive to me.
the GT was too mellow at lower volumes, loud it was ok.
the JJ ECC 803 had big balls, but was noisier than the 7025.
in my engl i didn't like the chinese tubes, in the herbert they just fit.
but with which tube i could replace the ruby when it brakes?
i heard they are the same as from tube amp doctor, but i'd prefer any other.
i know, preamptubes can last for a lifetime - hopefully.

best wishes
klaus

I like 'em there and most of my amps. Or better yet a real old version. Warms up the amp, changes the tone a bit.
