I have a confession to make.
When I first started reading about the "GnR" mod, I really wasn't interested. I grew up on Appetite for Destruction like a lot of Gen Xers, sure. I always liked Slash's guitar sound, yeah. But musically, I've no interest in sounding like GnR. Also, the SL2 was my favorite module, so I was loathe to risk changing it in case I actually preferred the original. So what finally convinced me to take the plunge was people reporting that it made the SL2 "more of what the SL2 was meant to be" far more than "more Slash."
And I have to say, I agree! The GnR'd up SL2 sounds a bit brighter in the high mids, has stronger bass, and seems to maintain more of the guitar's note definition. It "seems" to have more gain—because of the extra articulation I find I can can turn the gain up higher and retain definition, which means that practically I can use it with more gain than the factory SL2. The factory SL2 at full gain could get pretty dark and murky, but with the GnR mod it still sings, even turned up to 11!
So I'm extremely happy with the modification to the SL2, and I'd highly recommend folks who already love the SL2, and just want it to be the "best SL2 it can be." Forget about the "GnR" tag. I'm more into Rammstein these days than Guns N Roses; perhaps it could be called the Guns N Rammstein mod?
