First off, I'm really loving my Renegade head with the TM 212 cab, BUT....

I have always gotten a preponderance of a certain mid-range frequency that really cuts into my ears. I haven't swept through with a parametric EQ to find the specific frequency, but it's somewhere in the 1k range I think - the "honk-y" part of the EQ spectrum.

I have tried different power and preamp tubes, different guitars and different speakers in the 212. It's worse with some combinations than others, but it always seems to be there at some level.

I never experienced this with my modular rig (M4+VHT 2/50/2+Mojo 212 w their V30 style speakers).

At one practice, I ran the head through a Vai Legacy 412 loaded with V30s, and it seemed to really tame this spike down - but it didn't totally eliminate it. I was actually kind of surprised by this, since V30s have a natural mid spike to begin with.

I'm wondering if maybe it's something about the voicing of the TM 212 combined with my settings on the amp (although I don't think my settings are anything out of the ordinary)? But then everyone raves about the sound of the TM 212, so I tend to think that can't be it. I've been thinking about replacing it a TM 412 or a Renegade 410 cab and see how that works out. (I could use the extra height of the 412 anyway since my bass player is using 2 4x10 cabs :D )

Is the Renegade power section naturally more honk-y compared to the MOD50 power section, or a VHT power section?

Any suggestions/theories would be highly appreciated.

I bought a used Legacy 4x12 with V30's at GC after trying several other 4x12 cabs with a Rebel 20 head. I found the Legacy 4x12 cab really smoothed out the sound of my Rebel 20, compared with the Rebel 1x12 cab. I wish I had Aeroic's speaker stash to play with ...

From my own personal experience, things like this tend to be more mental than an actual issue. If I hear something that I don't like just one time, then I am always subconsciously listening for it and can usually convince myself that it is still there.

I am not suggesting that you are making it up but again, from my own experience, it is usually not a big deal but just the gear addicts way of finding an excuse to need more gear. That is how it works for me anyway.

I am sure that the frequency that is bothering you really does exist but my guess is that no matter what you change your brain will still hear it.

"Hello. My name is fek and I am a gear addict."
