I have been gassing for a Soldano SLO100 lately and I saw that the GC close to me had one in stock.
So I get down there and they also have the Bogner Goldfinger, Bogner 20th Shiva, and the XTC in the same room. I have never played a Bogner, so SWEET, right? Here's
my quick blurbs from the VERY brief time I heard them at the store (READ: not in a band context, not dialed in, etc)
The SLO is just awesome. Period. However, while playing it, I really felt like I could get really close tones with my EG5. The SLO may be a bit
more open sounding than the EG5, but the voicing is pretty darn close.
The XTC is EXACTLY like many of the great clips you hear of it. The blue channel was really a great sound - crunchy, a little compression and smooth. I dug it, but
not so much as the SLO.
The very cool and talented other guy in the room cranked up the 20th Shiva. This was my least favorite of the 3 Bogners. It sounded nice and had a nice thick tone, but maybe the way he had it set made it sound a little too grainy - not my cup of tea.
The Goldfinger. LOVED it. Great sound. So many options on the head - it was a little confusing at first to figure out, but I got the hang of it. LOVED LOVED LOVED the Old 69 mode and the 80's mode was great, too. The Clean was beautiful with great reverb.
Also, the Rebel 20 and Tweaker are just crazy bangs for the buck. The only Egnater's I can't jel with are the Tourmaster and Rebel 30, but the others are just smoking deals.
So what did I walk away with? Nothing but a big smile and peace knowing I can get close to most of these type tones out of my Egnater modules. Me, my wife and bank account are all very, very happy. I also learned I prefer high mids!
Bruce & Co. have the goods! Now hurry up and get the Modular line back up and at it...
