Hey guys,

I am thinking about getting a Diezel for a while now :)
In my focus are the Herbert and the Hagen, so now how do they compare? What I need for my amp are great cleans and lead and some really heavy rhythm sounds.
Perhaps some of you have tried both and can give me an hint :)

All the best,

Dominik

Try before you buy if you can, no point asking anyone else what they think as its all relatively subjective...
To answer your question though, neither amp is better than the other just different flavours of the same Diezel signiture sound.
Consider a D-moll into your focus as that's proving to be a awsome all rounder amp.

Agreed with the above. They're just different. If you're playing extreme metal of any kind, you should go with the Herbert. If you're just playing heavy stuff, I'd play both and decide - just different flavours. Obviously consider the VH4 and the D-Moll too.

One relevant question could be what "great cleans" are for you and your taste because herb has those big "hifi" or "piano" cleans while hagen and dmoll have quite a different clean channel.

Great Clean for me is like the clean channel of the Mesa Roadking II. I guess piano like cleans would be what I am searching for.

People always refer to Herbert being the best amp for metal although I think Hagen is much better suited for metal styles because it is a lot tighter and faster reacting and not as fat. Further it has more attack in the high-mids which is very well suited for down-tuned playing. Herbert has such huge low mids that somehow delays the attack a bit making it feel fater, looser and slower. It is more suited for Rock, Alternative and New Metal styles IMO.

I have to disagree. Particularly with the right pickups (e.g. a BKP C-Bomb), mid cut at 10ish and gain at 12-1 o'clock on Channel 2, the Herbert is incredibly good for ANY metal style. If anything, the Hagen is "greasier" and less tight than the Herbie.

To choose one Diezel, flip a coin. You won't get wrong.

If you go and try two Diezel, you'll end up with two amps !!!
(Or a lot of psychological damages due to the impossibility to find the better one of them)

Good luck !!!

Is there much difference in sound between those?
I guess the Herbert Cleans are better right?

I would have associated fender-ly jangly "romantic" cleans with the roadking, which is more hagen/dmoll clean/lowgain. Herb and vh4 have more "clean" cleans if you ask me.

Ultimately, you see it's hard to describe it so as always your best bet is to play and try yourself!!!

I prefer the Herbert I currently have to the Hagen I had for over a year. Hagen was just too dark and wooly for me, regardless of tubes/speakers. Herbert can be a bit boomy at times, but it sounds huge as a result, and IMO, is a bit better in a mix. I like the VH4 better than both though.

Hagen's got teeth and a sneer to it. A real grind.
Herbert's got a lot of power - and yes - the midcut is mega metal territory.

Overall? I'm still a VH4 kinda guy. But the Hagen is my most played Diezel as of late. The clean channel is awesome - very sparkly, not woody like the VH4. Ch.2 is similar to the VH4 but more open. Ch.3 is more grinding and like a chainsaw; whereas the VH4's Ch.3 is the ubiquitous Diezel tone. Ch.4 has a lot of territory on it with the Hagen - whereas the VH4's Ch.4 is a lead channel primarily - quite compressed and sustained.

I love Diezels.

I agree with Uncle Mo..I Love Diezel's

It is hard to choose because each offers something exceptional.

I own Herbert and Hagen...both are KILLER, yet presently Herbert gets more play time at gigs for it's versatility, tone, and the way it sits in the mix right now. I have played the Hagen as well and it's also excellent. Herbert just has a special place in my heart.

Now just need a VH4 :D

I guess I'll ask my music store to ship both amps to me :) Then I will try them out and send the other one back :)
