Has anyone compared a TM 412 with a Vai Legacy 412??

Hey guys,

Has anyone had a chance to play your Eggies through both of these cabs? Can anyone compare the tonal differences of the two?

I'm asking because I really want a TM 412, but Vintage 30s are very hit or miss with me, so I am hesitant to go for it. I really don't like V30s in my TM 212 at all, BUT I played my Renegade head through a Vai Legacy 412 loaded w/V30s at practice a few weeks ago, and I actually liked it quite a bit.

It seemed strange to me that I like the Legacy so much, since I really didn't like my TM 212 with V30s.

Is there something about the combination of a 412 w/V30s vs. a 212 w/V30s that smooths out the midrange of the speakers more?

I am trying to decide between buying the 412 or upgrading my 212 with Scumbacks - I can't do both right now. I was thinking that if the TM 412 sounds similar to the Vai Legacy, I could probably live with the V30s in it for a while until I could afford to replace them with Scumbacks....

Thanks for any insight!

Rick

If the speakers in the Vai cab are broken in, that could be a contributing factor.

A well-played V30 is more pleasing than a brand new one (but isn't that the case with most speakers?).

From my experience, V30's always sound better in a 4x12 because of the expanded frequency range and resonance of the bigger cab. The Legacy cab also sounds good with warmer, smoother amps like Eggie stuff as it was tuned for the Legacy head which is a dark sounding head. I honestly don't think you could go wrong either way, Eggie 4x12 or Legacy 4x12. Both sound great w/V30s IMO.
