I'd like to hear a more chimey clean sound from my VH4 that would make it perfect for me. Has anyone tried this? If so what did you do?

chimey? hmmmm I don't know man to me the VH4 has near perfect cleans.... I'd like them to be a bit more vintage but I'm happy has they are.....

what pickups are you using? I use single coils and it get PRETTY chimey.

To each his own. As far as clean sounds go, channel 1 is kind of dark and dull beside all the rest of the amps in my signature. It's got good low end but I would definitely like to hear it considerably brighter.

I think the easiest way is to switch to 6550 power tubes. They will improve the clean and make it brighter.

That would affect the other 3 channels which I love as they are. I want to stick with the EL34s. I'm looking to change the sound in the pre section more than changing the sound in the power section. I was thinking more along the lines of adding a capacitor somewhere or maybe changing the value of the cap on the bright switch.

Ah ok, in this case you should ask Peter Diezel himself via PM or e-Mail. I am sure he can answer your question.

Good idea!

Gain + Presence EQ can do wonders in this department... Just IMHO.

Last weekend I had a gig and was trying the new setup with the triamp, which has no second master, so I needed a boost to lift for solos. I just needed a volume lift but took my RC Booster in the loop. I hadn't expected that it would work in such a way as it did, not only made it loud, but man, what an impact that had on the cleans!!!! It added so much harmonic complexity on top - a bit too much for searing leads actually but trust me, for chime in cleans, add an RC Booster in the loop, not in front as most people do.

The VH4 has dedicated loops, so this would be perfect. No need to mod anything.

Whad'ya mean chimey, like a vox?

Just more high end that's all. Like my Wizard and my Ecstasy Classic.
Probably the easiest way would be changing the value of the cap on the bright switch which I find is noticable but doesn't have a big impact. I'm going to get in touch with Peter.

VH4 with 6550 tubes have more chime to their cleans for sure, I just switched to EL34's after running 6550's for a year...but the cleans are still real good. Obviously with single coils over humbuckers. My Ecstasy Classic does not have better cleans than my VH4 with EL34's IMO. I also have a 65 AMPs SOHO and Fender VibroKing for cleans too, but the VH4 is real real good! I like to push the gain as much as possible for channel 1.

Mine most definitely has a brighter clean.

Johnny,

which guitars and pickups You use ?

Also an other guitar cord could help a bit.

The most VH4s have a 68pF cap on the bright switch.
You can go to 100pF. 120pF or 150pF.

I think it could be a pickups/guitar thing........ or maybe there's something wrong with his VH4.....because mine can get ear piercing bright even with Humbuckers.

I play with strats and single coils 80% of the time so I run my clean channel with the bright switch off and treble around 2:00

I am using a 58 Flying V replica with Seymour Antiquities. The guitar is quite bright for a humbucker guitar (brighter than any LP) and is nice and bright in the Wizard and even in the Bogner. Don't get me wrong, the VH4 is definitely not dull sounding but I would like to hear more glassyness in the top. I'm going to try your recommendation starting with 100uf. I'll let you know my results.
Thanx!

PS: I should mention that I am using NOS Telefunken long plate tubes (except for V1 which is a JJ) which have a larger low end and mid content than the chinese tubes so that may have something to do with it. The other 3 channels sound so good that I don't want to go back to the chinese tubes just for the sake of channel 1. I much prefer the other 3 channels with the Teles in there.

hey man are those NOS tubes that good? I'll have to try them next!

You can also try the Yugoslavian long plate replicas made by Ei. The factory recently closed but you can find the tubes still readily available. Pretty much a faithful repro and yes! longplates make a huge difference in tone.
