I'm planning on replacing the other TV in my house with a 32" LCD.
My sons play a lot of games (xbox) on it. What the minimum response to I need to get in
order for the game to play properly?
Is 8ms enough? to I need to go down to 5 ms?

The lower the better. To be honest, it really depends on the monitor. You can't just look solely at one spec and expect something to perform perfectly. Everyone measures refresh rates slightly differently. A more important aspect to look at is contrast ratio. The bigger the number, the better it will look. What's your budget?

~$800
I've seen TV with refresh rate going from 6 ms for $1000 and the others around $700 for 8ms.

Anothering thing to consider also is the resolution size, most xbox games now support 1080, but those TV's get kind of expensive also

8ms also shouldn't even be noticeable, I think my 24" computer monitor is 8ms and it doesn't even ghost.

Yeah, that stuff is confusing as hell.

Go to some big stores and just get the one you think looks the best. It's just like gear shopping. That's about all you can do to really know.

Yeah, you're not kidding.
The best picture I've seen so far is the Panasonic with the 120 hz refresh and 6ms with a very high contrast. I don't remember exactly the number. It's still $1000

1080 is a bit of a waste of money on a 32'' because it's so small. There's no point unless you're going to be right up in front of the TV the entire time. Some 32'' models I personally like:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNT3253H- ... B000N50S3Q
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNT3242H- ... B000N4Z3TQ
https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TC-32LX ... B000OOG3KI

I personally own the LN T3253H Samsung TV. It's very good, especially if you need lots of ports. The Panasonic is great if you don't mind the fact that it can't do 1:1 display on a computer. The T3253H models with the older firmware had some issues, but they've been worked out with the newer ones. If you happen to get one with an older firmware, it can be updated via the USB port.

Yeah thats what I ended up doing when I bought my HDTV, specs dont necessarily mean its better if your eye cant tell the difference.

The Panasonic I saw was the one you linked.
I'm biased since my other TV is a Panasonic (42" plasma).
It looks like I'll have to wait a bit further until the price drops...

I just bought this:

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-KDL-46V2500- ... 666&sr=1-7

I;; say this, I had no idea HDMI cables were as expensive as light pipe.

HDMI cables are cheap as hell. People just get ripped the fuck off when they bought them from a store.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/subde ... p_id=10240

It's digital so signal degradation isn't something to really worry about unless you're running long-ass cables.

+1 to monoprice, thats where i got mine

Code's pretty much nailed it. Monoprice is awesome for cables.
In regards to refresh rates, it depends on the viewers. My eyes are very sensitive so I need as low of a refresh rate as possible. Also, the measurements given on most aren't 100% accurate so it is indeed best to go to say a store and check it out for yourselves.

At 32" 1080P is a waste of money, you cant see the difference. The conrast ratio and refresh will be the most important factors aside from price. You want to go with the 8 or 6ms models, the 120hz panasonic already mentioned is a great choice. Be careful about the numbers you see in stores though, there are multiple ways to test the contrast ratio, black to black, white to white, grey grey ect. so dont stake too much in the number given. Instead look at the dark areas of the picture and see which one gets blackest while staying clean, IE no popping, pixelization, grain, and which one still shows details of the picture. Samsungs current 42 and 53 models are good choices, as is the panasonic tx700's. Dont get duped into the sharp GP1 's, too much money for too little of an advantage in dark areas. And make sure that where ever you buy has a decent return policy, these tv's look one way on HD and can be either fine or absolutely terrible on SD just have to test it out at home.

As said before, 1080p on 32" is worthless. 1080p is only truely good at TV 50" and up, at least that is where it is going to be most evident. Also 720p and 1080p are really not that much different, the only way you're really going to see a difference is if you are sitting 3-5 feet away at pretty much all times. Also, 120Hz is overrated mostly. It does make judder and fast-motion blurr smoother on movies and such, but CAN be bad sometimes as it can look unnatural. Also, stay away from Panasonic, they really aren't that good, especially compared to a lot of other TVs.

All in all, hands down, without question, Samsung is going to be your best-buy. These 2 are the best to get if you are looking at getting strictly a 32".
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNS32...3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1198892839&sr=1-3
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNT32...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1198892798&sr=8-1
These 2 models are going to be the best ones to get.

Contrast ratio is just marketing bs, doesn't mean a thing. They aren't measured in real conditions, and there is no set standard for measuring it, so what the contrast will actually look like is totally unrelated to what the number is.

This is the tv I'm getting

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6889253072

The panasonics and samsungs are good too, but the toshibas seemed to be very well liked on the hd forums and newegg sells the refurbished for $600 sometimes. I went to the store to try and check them out in person, but it really didn't tell me anything as they were all set up terribly

another vote for monoprice.

telephant, that's a serious set you just bought. i have the no frills sony kdl-40S3000, which is not a 1080p set, but has a 10 bit panel and 10 bit processing that looks fucken amazing. response time is 8ms, but i dont notice any lag on any of my xbox360 games. theres some great reviews for the 32" model as well.

just take a look at as sets as possible, and take a gander at avsforums.com to confuse you even further. haha. ive been hooked on this site for well over a year and have learned a shitload of information on there.

good luck.
