Help! 4x12 Sounds Thin

I just picked up a Mojotone 4x12 from a fellow RT member and loaded it with a set of vintage G12K-85s I purchased on Reverb. I've used these speakers before and loved the tone--huge, warm, and punchy are accurate descriptors--but for some reason this cab/speaker pairing sounds really thin and trebly, and lacks volume. (My old Greenback/V30MF-loaded Peavey smokes it in every respect, in fact.)

The speakers look fine physically, with no cone rips or frame distortion, and I'm virtually certain that the cab is wired properly as well. (I even checked the ohms with a multimeter post-installation.) As for the cab itself, it's a top-quality, all-birch unit that theoretically should sound great in this configuration.

Did I get some dud speakers, or could there be something else going on?

Sounds like they are wired wrong. Otherwise if you're 100% positive it's wired correctly you might have to go back and test each speaker separately. Or in pairs.

Thanks for the input. Could it be wired wrong but still reading the proper ohms?

I could very well be wrong, but I'd imagine it could still read the proper ohm level while being wired out of phase.
Don't take my word for it though, I'm sure there are people on the forum with a firm grip on these things!

Give the battery test a try maybe?

Yes. It does sound like out-of-phase speakers. You can check with a 9v battery, just check to see they all move same direction when connected/disconnected from battery.

-sounds out of phase, yes it will still read the proper ohmage-

-does it have a PCB mono/stereo switch? if so remove it-

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm going to double-check the wiring tomorrow and, if necessary, try the battery test. It's a single input with no PCB or switch, so no worries there.

I run G85's in my quad and yeah they sound awesome. To me they are similar to a T75 but with really warm bottom end and punch with just enough scoop to was. Does sound like a phase issue

Update: The wiring was fine, but the battery test revealed two of the speakers to be out of phase with the other pair. I thought simply swapping the leads around (positive to negative and vice versa) would rectify the problem, but no such luck. Do I need two new speakers, or is there some other workaround I might pursue?

Updated update: After an hour's worth of wiring and rewiring, I finally came up with a combination that worked properly. I can't describe how f-ed up it looks inside, but at least it's finally "correct" and should sound great. Looking forward to testing it out tonight.

-congrats!! Did you ohm test it again?

Absolutely. It's spot-on (well, within range at roughly 14 ohms), and the cab sounds outstanding now.

Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions. I've wired up a lot of speakers in my day and never run into anything like this before.

Man, I love the G12K-85's. I have a pair of vintage Made in England white stripes in a hand made 2x12 cabinet... It sounds great but a 2x12 is not loud enough with two guitars in one band, at least not at a outside venue.

I want to wire in the 2 G12K-85's in a 4x12 with a different pair of cheap speakers but I am afriad of the headache that will follow if it doesn't work right.

Good job on getting it up and running!
