Hey folks,

Its kinda come to a head now, since im in half term and ive had time to fiddle, but im really not sure what to do. Essentially, i have a Herbert that was one of the first and im just not satisfied with the sound. I thought i was falling out of love with it, untill i saw one in a shop and was blown away by how it sounded, albeit through a better cab but with a cheap/nasty guitar, so there must be something not right with it. The obvious answer is the tubes, but i have replaced all of those trying to fix this problem, and its barely made a difference. Im running it through a marshall 1960AV, which isnt a great cab, but ive tested it with my buddies recto standard cab and its still not right.

Essentially, its just not very tight at all, i play a lot of low tuned stuff with my 7 string, but even with a 6 in standard it feels really loose, not like the one i tried in the store at all. Theres also a lot of background hum/noise, even with the mute on. Also, the delay with when the lights come on from when you first power up the amp, then go out and then come back on again, seems to be far longer than i remember it. It also feeds back on itself uncontrollably when the amp is turned up past 12 oclock on the channel and master volumes, it really is an ungodly awful sound.

My issue is that, since theyre still such a rare beast and theres nothing tangibly wrong with it, i.e. it still powers up and makes noise, a tech thats never seen one before will be hard pressed to find the issue and fix it. The obvious answer is to send it home to Peter, but UPS fucked it up last time and it had to go back, and i have a sneaky suspicion its never been quite right since then. If ive fallen out of love with it, then thats fine, but i cant in good conciousness sell it while i think theres a problem with it.

What should i do? Is there anything it might be, other than the tubes thats an easy fix? Advice? Ideas? Prayers?

I appreciate the offer Peter! I emailed Diezel UK to see if there are any techs who have good experience that they can recommend. As for now id rather not send it that far, just becuase of the cost and the risk involved, but obviously, if it comes to it, ill have to bite the bullet and send it your way. Ill let you know what they say when they get back to me :D

Thanks for the input

Sending it to Peter is your safest bet, but seriously, that sounds exactly like the filter caps going out. If you remember the thread I had up, look it up. They're pretty easy to change out if you don't de-solder the leads from the board and just wrap the new leads around the old and run some solder on them. IF you want to bother with it check and see if the 500v 22uf caps have fluid or foamy looking stuff coming out of the "plastic" side, if there is, then it's bad. They will produce hum, noise, weaker lowend, muddy sound, and can effect tightness. From what I've been told Diezel uses Illinois capacitors now. Those Ruby caps are just unreliable caps and I think alot of the problems most people are experiencing that can't be solved with tubes are those caps. Newer amps won't have them though from what I've been told.
