Help me like my Renegade

I have a few gripes about my Renegade 212 combo that I'm desperate to solve.

First of all, How do I disconnect the Fan? It's so annoying. Is there really a need for it? 100watt Marshalls manage fine without one.

Also, the amp makes a really irritating rattle when I play, I can't tell whether its the Tubes, Chassis or Speakers, but you can't ignore it. I'm worried that i've read so many accounts of bad tubes in these amps that have had to be replaced almost immediatly. At £1100 the amp should be top notch straight out of the box.

Last week,I spent 5 hours working on EVERY possible amp setting in a few different rooms. Using all of the switch combinations and tube mixes, cranking the amp to really work it, and every setting sounds so harsh and brittle. Engaging the deep switch takes the edge off that, but just adds a huge Thump to the sound. Could it be the V30 speaker? If I can't solve the problem I'm either gonna part ex it, or have it modded, to disconnect all of the bright/tight/deep/normal switches, to me they serve no purpose. This amp would be great with JUST the Tube mix.

I don't mean to complain, I really liked the look of these amps, but this is the 3rd one ive had in 6 months. Had to send the last one back because it just died during a gig, The tubes were still lit, but all the electronics were out.

Any suggestions to solve these problems? If I could get some usable Amp settings to try that would be great :-D

Many Thanks

MiKe

I have the Renegade 1/12 but i dont believe you should not have the rattling problem. The 1/12 doesn't rattle at high volumes. As far as the tones, i find it odd that you cant find the right tone, ill be honest when i play in a band i find the renegade to be not as full sounding as i would like but i figured it was just cause its a 1/12. Other than that im digging mine so far.. about 6 months in...

Could one of the speaker screws be loose? I'd make sure every screw on the thing was as tight as possible.

Fan: I think I understand, but do you hear it when you play? I on stage I can never hear the fan with quiet, ambient room noise. I hear it when it's in my basement and I'm not playing, but that's it. I did get some help from Egnater to replace the original fan that was noisier than the fan should be. But now, it's not an issue for me.

Tone: Could be this isn't the amp for you if you can't dial in a tone that you like. Personal preference is not a reflection on quality or price range. If you don't think you can tweak this amp to your tastes, I'm sure there is an amp out there that would work for you.

Gotta find something that works for you.

I have the head and TM 212. Harsh and brittle my rig is NOT. If anything I find myself turning up the treble and presence to get more sparkle at times. When I first got mine, I found the tone to be too flat and uninvolving but a complete tube change fixed that.

With all the controls available on the Renegade, I can dial up practically any kind of tone I could ever want. as far as the rattle, it could be a tube. Speaker vibrations in combos can be rough on tubes. Specially what passes for tubes these days.

Did you buy the amp for the "look" or the sound? Maybe it's just not the amp for you...As others have said, brittle and harsh are not how I'd describe the sound of mine. I have the head with a 212 cab with V30's. I love the mini toggles. I can pretty much dial in what I'm looking for...

Thanks for the posts

Sorry I should have clarified that by 'look', I meant the whole package, design, sound, Tube Mix option etc. Maybe it is just a 'Faulty' amp. Even though the one I had before died and had to be replaced, It didn't sound as Harsh and Brittle as the one I have now.

Meh, Time to save the pennies and buy a Bogner, or a CAE/SUHR OD100  :D

Try the Egnater Mod 50. Custom designed and custom built in the USofA. Killer modules with lots of possible tones. Solid as a rock, plenty loud, 50 watts, 4 channels (with 2 modules), 2 different effects loops, slave out, options, options, options. I recommend the D/D module and the VX or Bassman module.

I had a Bogner Shiva and to be honest with you I like the Renegade a LOT better. I sold the Shiva

I agree. A buddy of mine had a Shiva and i wasn't too impressed...He wound up selling it for an SLO...I had a Two- Rock CR for about a month for a product write up, boy that amp was on a whole nother planet! Wish I had $5500 for that one...

MikeGtr....I am sorry to hear of your troubles.

I do not find the 2x12 Renegade to sound harsh at all. In fact, I prefer it to the 1x12 for fullness of sound and IMO a much better crunch and lead tone out of channel 2....most probably because of the added V30 speaker in the 2x12. I can't compare the 2x12 with the head and 2x12 tourmaster rig because I haven't had the opportunity to play the head and cab.

However, if you feel the sound of the 2x12 is too harsh and have really spend some time trying to dial it in without success....try the 1x12 combo because it does sounds much darker to me in channel 2 which I personally do not like......however, to each their own and you may prefer the sound.

I do find channel 1 to sound great in both the 1x12 and 2x12, but prefer the added fullness of the 2x12 in this channel as well.

I will be receiving my NIB 2x12 Renegade combo soon to replace my recently purchase NIB 1x12 (which still sounds good....just not as good to me) soon. I was able to spend quality time at home with both of these amps and the 2x12 was clearly right for me.

Regarding fan noise.....yes it is audible to me while in standby, but not at all when I am playing. I haven't found the fan noise to be an issue with me, but that could depend on each individual amp. Personally, I am glad Egnater included a fan to keep the tubes cooler.....which should result in added tube life regardless of which tubes one selects.

I hope this helps.

Thanks guys for all the advice. Much appreciated. Working through it... :-D
